Every document told part of the truth. Together, they told the story Brian had hoped nobody would assemble before Sunday.

The trust paid for Lily and Mason’s care, education, medical needs, and stable home support. It did not pay Brian directly. It did not pay Marissa for vacations.

And it did not become available because two children were hidden, transferred, or labeled difficult.

In fact, the trust contained a protection clause Ellen had fought to include. If either child was abandoned, medically endangered, or removed from the home under suspicious circumstances, control moved to an independent trustee and emergency guardian review.

Brian hadn’t read closely enough. Or maybe he had read it, and believed he could scare the children quiet until paperwork made them disappear from the weekend.

Either way, he had mistaken silence for control.
