But as the Lily Vance Memorial Textile Center and Community Workshop.

Funded by Julian’s trust, the center offered, entirely free of charge, clothing design, and sewing classes, and formal-wear tailoring, to those who needed them most: low-income students, foster youth, and young people preparing for the job interviews that might change their lives, who could not otherwise afford to walk into those rooms looking the way the world demanded they look.

On opening day, the shop that had stood silent and grieving for forty years was filled, at last, with light, and laughter, and the steady, hopeful hum of sewing machines.
