It’s been just a few weeks since Hiram High School’s 18-year-old Sienna Stewart collapsed during graduation on May 23.
Stewart was able to walk across the stage to receive her diploma despite battling severe cardiomyopathy and a recent heart failure diagnosis – a moment her family will always cherish.
On the day of her graduation, Sienna passed out without warning. When the teenager regained consciousness, paramedics quickly arrived and she broke down in tears as she insisted on finishing walking the platform.
Ten years ago, at the age of four, Sienna suffered from severe cardiomyopathy; she started being “sick” earlier this year. After the transplant, she lived a fairly normal life for ten years, but lately, she has been “weaker and slower.”
Saevon Chum, Sienna’s mother, revealed that her daughter occasionally passed out; one such incident happened during her graduation.
The high school principal was heard saying, “Give us a second, please, we have a student, give us a second,” as Sienna fell.
The mother told Fox5At/anta, “The ambulance was already there when I got there.” “She passed out. She had another incident. But it was the first time she passed out.”
When Sienna regained consciousness, she begged her mother to let her walk the stage instead of going to the hospital. She received a standing ovation from her classmates and the audience as she was the last student to collect her graduation certificate that day.
“That’s all she could tell me, ‘I just want to walk and graduate.'” That’s all she wanted, Saevon said, adding that she missed prom because of the hospital stay.
Sienna sadly passed away suddenly just weeks after reaching the important milestone of graduating high school. “As a mother, you feel incredibly lucky because she overcame something painful for herself. You should feel honored. I was proud until the very end,” commented Saevon.
According to her obituary, Sienna was well on her way to studying ultrasound technology in the fall of her college career.
We sincerely apologize for this terrible loss. Peace be with her as she rests.
Sienna Stewart’s story is a testament to her incredible strength and resilience. Despite battling severe cardiomyopathy and heart failure, she was determined to experience the joy of walking across the stage to graduate – a moment her family and those who witnessed it will remember forever.
Her courage, even in the face of health problems, inspired her classmates and the entire community, earning her a standing ovation for what has become one of her latest achievements.
Although Sienna’s life was tragically cut short just weeks after graduation, her legacy of perseverance and determination will live on. She had plans for the future with aspirations to study ultrasound technology, and her journey serves as a reminder of the strength that individuals like her have, even in the face of enormous challenges.
While her family and friends mourn this profound loss, they are proud to know that Sienna faced her struggles with grace, courage, and a relentless will to live her life to the fullest.
