A touching trend has emerged, where men confidently display one painted fingernail in public, driven by a meaningful cause. This choice allows men to express their solidarity with a noble purpose, and the choice of nail color varies from person to person.
While some individuals take it a step further by embellishing their painted nails with unique designs, the core message remains unaltered. This distinctive trend initially surfaced in Australia but has since crossed the ocean to find resonance among American men.
The inception of this movement can be attributed to a profound encounter between Elliot Costello and a young girl named Thea while he was traveling with a group called Hagar International. Thea’s remarkable spirit deeply affected Elliot, prompting him to paint his nails, and setting off a series of events. Elliot and his team had ventured to Cambodia with a common goal: to bring about positive change in the lives of the community’s residents.
To Elliot’s surprise, it was the smallest villager, Thea, who left the most profound impression. Their interaction unveiled a pervasive issue affecting children worldwide, including the United States, not just Cambodia.
To connect with the young girl on her terms, Elliot engaged with Thea in a way she enjoyed. Nail polish became a crucial element of their bonding. As they conversed about her life and hardships, Thea painted one of Elliot’s nails, and he reciprocated by painting one of hers.
It was during this poignant moment that Elliot learned about Thea’s traumatic experience of sexual abuse. In a heartfelt gesture, he promised Thea that he would always keep that nail painted, serving as a constant reminder of her and the suffering she endured.
This powerful encounter reignited Elliot’s determination to effect positive change among men, striving to make the world a safer place for children vulnerable to sexual abuse. Thus, the concept of the Polished Man project was born. Men were challenged to dedicate a week to painting one fingernail, becoming a symbol of support for the #PolishedMan movement. This singular nail on a hand of five symbolizes the one in five children who become victims of sexual violence.
The Polished Man organization, dedicated to ending sexual violence against children, asserts that being a Polished Man entails confronting violent behavior and language on both local and global scales. With men responsible for a staggering 96% of such violence against children worldwide, Elliot recognized that men must play a pivotal role in catalyzing change if we hope to eradicate the abuse of innocent children.
The ultimate objective extends beyond the visual impact of seeing a man with a polished nail. Instead, Elliot aspires for the painted nail to serve as a catalyst for conversations about the unfortunate reality of child abuse. These conversations could lead to innovative ideas and, ideally, donations to support educational programs and resources for child survivors of abuse, as highlighted by APlus.
In the spirit of spreading awareness and support for this essential cause, please share this article with your family and friends. Together, we can contribute to a safer and more compassionate world for our children.
need to get me some polish!
I had no idea that 1 in 5 kids would be victimized! I am a survivor and really appreciated this story.
As an adult former victim of child abuse from the time I was 11 until I was 16, it is most often a family member who is the abuser, and the child victim does not know we her or how to reach out for help. It is a silent tragedy that deserves more attention to the profound negative impact that will last a lifetime. No child deserves this and punishment is not severe enough for those few who are caught. I have reservidly forgiven my abuser, but the scars will remain a lifetime. I’m nearly 70 years old and have very mixed feelings about this. I hope this is a true movement and not some scam. It is the first I’m hearing about the polished man
