The FedEx driver who was shot had a properly licensed handgun, according to police.
In a surprising incident that highlights the importance of personal safety, a FedEx driver found himself in a dangerous situation while on the job…
The 32-year-old driver was delivering a box to a home in the 600 block of Unruh Avenue when the incident began. The attacker approached him, took his wallet and keys, then shot him, according to Philadelphia Police Capt. Jason Smith. When the driver returned fire, Jean Lundy, 27, was seriously injured.
Police later discovered Lundy unconscious in the 1400 block of Creston Street. He was pronounced dead at Einstein Medical Center soon after arrival. Police found the victim’s FedEx identification card at the scene.
Lundy was discovered with another man and the car was searched. According to police, Lundy was driven from the scene of the shooting in a car. The person was brought in for questioning, but it was not clear if he was being investigated for anything. Smith said: “He’s talking to us, obviously not suggesting he had any role in this robbery.
The victim, who fled the scene and was discovered slumped over the steering wheel of the truck with a gunshot wound to the abdomen, was discovered in the Acme parking lot in the 6600 block of Oxford Avenue.
After he claimed to have shot Lundy, officers found his properly registered 9mm handgun and permit it to carry in the car.
Acting Police Commissioner Christine Coulter said the initial description given appeared to be self-defense: He was shot first and then returned fire. Margie Helverson, a resident of the area where the shooting occurred, described the driver as a “nice guy.” She said, “I pray he is all right. He will ring the bell to let you know there is a package.”
The safety of our team members and service providers is our top priority, and we are now cooperating fully with the investigating authorities, said a FedEx representative, who declined to comment on whether the company has a policy regarding its drivers carrying weapons.
This unfortunate event sheds light on the unpredictability of certain situations and the importance of being prepared for the unexpected. The driver’s ability to defend himself at a critical moment highlights the importance of personal safety measures. As the community mourns the loss of Jean Lundy and ponders the ramifications of the incident, it’s also a sobering reminder that vigilance and preparedness can sometimes make the difference in a life-threatening situation.
