Desires Expressed by an Oklahoma Foster Child’s Wishlist

A Foster Parent’s Honest Wish List: A Story of Hope, Healing, and Compassion

Dreamcatchers for Abused Children is a non-profit organization with a deep mission: the reform and support of abused children. Their commitment revolves around educating the public about all aspects of child abuse, including symptoms, intervention, prevention, statistics, reporting, and most importantly, helping victims find the resources they need to get on the road to recovery. The organization recently shared a moving and heartbreaking story that sheds light on the resilience and longing for love that often resides in the hearts of children who have gone through unimaginable hardships.

This story takes place in the state of Oklahoma, where a young child finds himself in the foster care system after suffering severe abuse from his parents, both severe alcoholics. His life lacked the love and joy that usually accompanies childhood, replaced instead by neglect and hunger. The boy’s formative years were marked by deprivation and suffering.

After the intervention of the police, who ensured that the child was placed in a safe and loving environment, the boy was transferred to a dream catcher for abused children.

Finally, the young man compiled a wish list of all the things he wanted for his new permanent home when the organization found the ideal family and informed him of the great news.

The list, it goes without saying, made a lot of people cry. Many people took the time to mention that most of the items on the list are just basic necessities and that kids shouldn’t even think about having them.

“Things I want for my family: I want food and water,” the list reads.

Don’t come near me.

house with electricity and running water.

I long for love

Parents don’t fight.

I’m against drugs.

Don’t hurt my animals.

help with academics.

nice, spotless clothes.

No nits. The house is bug-free.

clean the house

Blankets on a tidy bed.

Don’t sell my toys.

treated fairly.

Avoid waste.

TV in the home.

I want to keep my school supplies.

nice pair of shoes.

I made comb soap. A nice residence with a safe and a coat with heat.

Toothbrush.”

This list serves as a gentle reminder to never take the possessions we have for granted.

As we consider the heartfelt wishes of this brave young soul, we are reminded that it is within our collective power to make a difference in the lives of children who are suffering. The story of this child’s journey from despair to hope is a testament to the resilience of the human spirit and the transformative power of compassion.

By sharing this story, we honor the dedication of organizations like Dreamcatchers for Abused Children, the vigilance of caring neighbors, and the limitless capacity for love and healing that resides in the hearts of children. May this narrative serve as a catalyst for change and inspire us all to work towards a world where every child’s wish list is fulfilled and their dreams are nurtured with love and care.
