Katharine Ross was born on January 29, 1940, in Hollywood, California. Her parents were not actors, unlike many other Hollywood celebrities.
Dudley, her father, served as a commander in the United States Navy in addition to being a correspondent for the Associated Press. His family moved around a lot because of this.
They lived in Virginia before moving to Palo Alto, California, and then living in Walnut Creek, a suburb of San Francisco, California. Katharine grew up there and attended Las Lomas High School where she graduated in 1957.
She went on to attend Santa Rosa Junior College, which proved pivotal to her destiny. She had her first acting lesson at school.
Participating in her first theater performances changed the life of Katharine Ross irrevocably.
After appearing in a school production of The King and I, she decided she wanted to take her acting career seriously. But Katharine decided to leave the school after only one year.
Rather, she moved into a small apartment above a grocery store and applied to The Actors Workshop in San Francisco.
The Early Years and Career of Katharine Ross
Over the course of three years, Ross continued to hone her acting skills and improve as a result. Eventually, she managed to get a few small parts in a TV series. She was an accomplished actor, but she was also a skilled auditioner.
In 1968, Ross declared, “I was the queen of screen tests,” to Life Magazine. “He leaves every day at the Workshop’s curtain time from San Francisco to Los Angeles. I’ve taken on the roles of several different drivers, including a wealthy, snobbish young hit-and-run driver and an innocent hit-and-run driver. I’ve played to Gunsmoke the pitiful crippled PEC.”
Joel Fabiani, Ross’ college sweetheart, was the first husband she met while in college. The two married in 1960. He was the first of five husbands, but more on that later.
The years after her marriage to Fabiani were extremely important in Ross’s life. Her numerous television western appearances helped her gain recognition. She was a fantastic fit for this genre because she is the pure beauty that she is.
However, Katharine Ross’ career has not been all sunshine and roses, although being cast in so many TV shows may sound like a dream. She too was abused and exploited, as were many others in the industry.
In other words, the 1960s weren’t all fun and games for some teen TV stars.
“I remember doing a screen test for The Young Lovers, the only film Samuel Goldwyn Jr. ever directed. It was originally going to star Peter Fonda, they brought in Chad Everett to do a screen test with me because he was unavailable. screen test him, not realizing that the part was already cast. I was too cowardly to tell him the truth. I had several appointments with a hair stylist to achieve the look I wanted for Sam. When they were done, they cut all my hair AND finally decided to cast someone else,” Katharine told Variety.
Casting Elaine in ‘The Graduate’ is Katharine Ross.
“I’ll tell you what was really great about it,” she said. “Films with a small budget of $1 million were considered the way to go at a time when the old studio system was dying and they were just starting to try new techniques. And it turned out to be the beginning of a wonderful new age.” which would eventually give rise to the independent film movement.”
In 1962, Katharine made her television debut in an episode of Sam Benedict. Her first feature appearance was in James Stewart’s 1965 film Shenandoah, which had a Civil War theme. After Ross was signed to Universal the following year, director Mike Nichols saw that the young, gifted actress had something special when she began working on her first lead role in Games.
He gave her the role of Elaine in The Graduate starring Dustin Hoffman, which is probably the most famous of all her film roles.
“It was Dustin Hoffman, a theaterman in New York. His pale appearance gave the impression that he had just emerged from under a rock. All he wanted was to get back to his Off-Broadway production. What I thought that first day, even though we ended up getting to know each other and liking each other, it was, ‘Oh my God — this guy is dressed in all black and he’s white as a sheet,'” Ross recalled in an interview with the Houston Chronicle.
“Gene Hackman, Dustin’s former roommate, was cast as my father, as you know. He bowed out, though I’m not sure exactly what the problem was.”
Ross became an overnight celebrity and The Graduate was a masterpiece. She received nominations for New Star of the Year at the Golden Globes and Best Supporting Actress at the Academy Awards.
It is still unclear what the graduate’s decision is. Elaine was saved from the wedding by Benjamin, but their reaction as they boarded the city bus was not what many expected.
The Sundance Kid and Butch Cassidy
Most thought that the beautiful story of two people in love who were torn apart by external forces and then suddenly seduced again would have a happy ending. However, the two were silent to each other.
So what did Katharine believe happened between the two characters? As is often the case, the resolution was not predetermined.
“In every scene, you’re told to keep going until the director yells, ‘Cut! But Mike kept it to himself for a very long time. The camera kept moving even when we ran out of dialogue. “I think Elaine got off at the next stop.
Katharine secured another important commission in 1969. She played in one of the most famous scenes in history when she balanced on the handlebars of the bicycle on which the actor Paul Newman was pedaling in the now-famous film Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid.
Although she was not aware of it at the time, Ross was in the same film as her true love by the time they finished production.
At least during the early years of her career, Ross’ private life was quite a rollercoaster. Katharine was married five times; her last marriage lasted over 40 years, which is an amazing achievement.
As previously reported, Ross first married Joel Fabiani in 1960. After serving as husband and wife for two years, Ross married John Marion in 1964. Three years passed during their marriage. She then married for the third time in 1969 to Butch Cassidy and Sundance Kid cameraman Conrad Hall. After their divorce in 1973, Ross married Gaetana “Tom” Lisi the following year.
In 1979, the year Katharine Ross met the true love of her life, they parted ways.
Katharine Ross and Sam Elliott’s romantic story
Screenwriter Sam Elliott also starred Katharine in Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. But since he was only an extra in the film, he refrained from approaching her. All he could do, the now-famous actor said in 2018, was “just watch Katharine come and go.”
“Katherine Ross, my wife, and I worked together on Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, but I was too scared to approach her at the time. She was thrust into the spotlight. In 2015, Elliott told AARP The Magazine, “I was celebrated additionally in the bar scene, a shadow on the wall.”
Being a member of the program and a contract player (with Fox) allowed me to get to see them produce the film, so it was an amazing experience. When they were in Los Angeles, I spent a lot of time in a dark corner watching Katharine and others work,” he told The Oklahoman.
Ten years passed before Katharine and Sam crossed paths again. The first film they worked on together was the gothic horror film The Legacy, in which they were both cast. Sam Elliott didn’t want to go to the London premiere of the film because he didn’t believe it was that good. He eventually allowed himself to be persuaded to travel because he was “infatuated” with Katharine.
The actress claimed that their romantic connection was sparked by his unique baritone voice and rugged good looks.
She said, “Probably all that and more,” to The Mercury News. “As we worked together, one thing led to another. And now here we are.”
Four months after the wedding of Katharine Ross and Sam Elliott, on September 17, 1984, the couple welcomed Cleo Rose Elliott into the world. Cleo also wanted to become a musician and work in the entertainment industry. And maybe it was a good thing in retrospect.
Today I am Katharine Ross.
She said of her singing career, “My parents are totally supportive,” to The Malibu Times. “They’re just glad I don’t want to be an actor.
Sam Elliott and Katharine Ross’ on-screen partnership continued after The Legacy. The two have made numerous appearances together, including co-stars in the TV movies Travis McGee and Houston:
Conagher and the Texas legend. Elliott called the latter “one of the highlights of my career”.
Elliott played an aging Western film star in the 2017 film The Hero, while Ross played his ex-wife. While it may not accurately reflect their daily lives, the pair finds great joy in discovering new experiences together.
In 2016, Elliott told the Los Angeles Times, “I think we just love making movies and having that creative experience together is the best.”
It’s just nice. Going home with co-workers is a completely different energy than going home with someone who doesn’t work. It was a very satisfying experience.”
Ross and Elliott split their time between their Oregon and California residences. The two walked together at the Screen Actors Guild Awards earlier this year. Katharine has not acted as an actress in any TV show or movie for some time.
But she became a prolific writer as she published several children’s books.
Although it took a lot of work, her and Sam’s marriage was worth it. And it seems that there is only one key to their lasting marriage.
“I believe that in the end, we have to work on loving each other. And I believe that the desire to be married is the most important of all,” Sam explained. “The two things I wanted out of life were to have a career in film, to get married and start a family. And to have both is an embarrassment of riches.”
In conclusion, the story of Katharine Ross’ life is a fascinating journey through the golden age of Hollywood, full of ups and downs, triumphs and challenges. From her humble beginnings in Hollywood to her rise to fame in iconic films like “The Graduate” and “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid,” Ross has left an indelible mark on cinematic history. Despite personal and professional obstacles, including several marriages and career transitions, Ross has remained resilient and dedicated to her craft. Her enduring love story with Sam Elliott is a testament to the power of partnership and commitment. Ross’s legacy as a talented actress and writer continues to enjoy a quieter life away from the limelight, inspiring generations of fans and emerging artists alike.
