The shocking story was released by the Nebraska Humane Society on April 15.
After hearing the animal inside the dumpster, the person called Animal Control. She was shocked to learn that the creature was a dog and not, say, a raccoon.
The dog was incredibly well groomed, its legs, tail, and head taped together. In addition, there were reports that “food and other debris were baked into his fur.”
Kevin Wegerin, the employee who responded, told KETV, “I’ve never seen anything like it.” “The whole muzzle was taped up and then there was tape covering the eyes and he was just sitting there and his front and back paws were taped up too.
“That was the most disgusting thing I’ve ever seen,” he said, adding: “I was so sick.” “I can’t imagine doing that to another living being, let alone a helpless dog, and then just throwing it away like trash.”
It was a miracle he was found in time; according to the NHS, the truck showed up about thirty minutes after Animal Control responded to the complaint and removed the litter.
The Nebraska Humane Society received the puppy. After anesthetizing him, the staff set about cutting the tape. To remove all the dirt, they had to cut his fur.
The dog was “otherwise healthy and appeared to be in good spirits despite his condition,” they posted on Facebook, adding that he was “bouncing and wagging his tail” despite minor skin issues.
When they removed the tape, the staff luckily found the microchip. It was revealed that Leo the dog had disappeared a few days ago.
Leo’s owner, Erin Dillon-Pasillas, says the dog ran away while she was taking her son to school. She spent days caring for her lost cat and going to shelters.
“Every day was harder and harder… They were just crickets,” she told KETV. “I was shivering when I called them. You’re probably thinking, ‘Please be my dog.’
Although Erin was happy to have her dog back, she was saddened by what happened to poor Leo.
She told the NHS: “I don’t know why anyone would do this, but he’s the cutest dog.”
Now that Leo has recovered from his ordeal, Erin has promised to give him a luxurious bath and vet checkup.
Who exactly did this to Leo is unknown. According to the NHS, there are no cameras near the litter bin where Leo was found. A $1,000 reward is being offered for information leading to an arrest and they encourage anyone with information to contact Animal Services at 402-444-7800.
The heart-wrenching story of Leo, a dog who was found wrapped in duct tape in a dustbin, has shocked and outraged the public. Discovered by the Nebraska Humane Society on April 15, this appalling act of cruelty caused immediate horror and disbelief among those who came to his aid. A concerned citizen alerted Animal Control after hearing noises from the dumpster, expecting to find a raccoon, but instead found Leo, a well-groomed dog with his muzzle, eyes, and limbs tightly taped and covered in dirt and debris.
Kevin Wegerin, an employee of the Nebraska Humane Society, described the scene as he removed the tape and said it was the most disturbing sight he had ever seen in his career. The sheer cruelty of taping a defenseless dog and abandoning it like garbage shook him to the core. Fortunately, Leo was discovered just in time before the garbage was collected, which ensured immediate medical attention.
Leo’s journey to recovery began as soon as he arrived at the Nebraska Humane Society. Despite the trauma and discomfort the tape caused, Leo demonstrated resilience and good spirits. Staff worked diligently to remove the tape and clean him, revealing a microchip that linked him to his owner, Erin Dillon-Pasillas. Erin, who frantically searched for Leo after he went missing while taking her son to school, expressed both relief and sadness at his return.
The community rallied behind Lee, offering support and expressing outrage at the cruel treatment he endured. Determined to seek justice for Leo, the Nebraska Humane Society has offered a reward for any information leading to the arrest of those responsible. While Leo continues to recover in his owner’s loving care, Erin plans to give him the pampering and veterinary care he deserves after such a harrowing ordeal.
Leo’s story is a testament to the resilience of animals and the compassion of those who intervened to save him. It also highlights the importance of responsible pet ownership and the urgent need to protect animals from senseless cruelty. As investigations continue to uncover the perpetrators, Leo’s story serves as a reminder of the ongoing fight against animal cruelty and the community’s unwavering commitment to justice for all creatures who suffer cruelty.
