“Domestic Violence Survivor Escapes With Quick Thinking Help from Store Worker”

Walmart Employee’s Quick Thinking Saves Domestic Violence Victim in Nebraska

What started as a routine shopping trip turned into a moment of rescue and relief for a Nebraska woman trapped in an abusive relationship. Thanks to the alertness of a Walmart employee, a domestic violence victim was able to find safety after days of fear and failed attempts to escape her abuser.

According to the Gage County Sheriff’s Office, the 47-year-old woman had been trying for two days to get away from her boyfriend, Justis Barnhouse, who allegedly strangled her several times and took her phone to stop her from seeking help.

While shopping last Tuesday afternoon, the woman managed to catch the attention of a Walmart employee and quietly signaled for help. She led the worker to the store’s restroom, where she explained the abuse she had endured. Recognizing the urgency, the employee immediately called 911.

Deputies quickly arrived and located the woman, Barnhouse, and their camper parked at a nearby truck stop less than a mile from the store. Barnhouse was arrested and now faces multiple charges, including assault by strangulation and domestic assault.

A Reminder of Everyday Heroism

Because one employee trusted their instincts and acted quickly, a victim was able to escape a dangerous situation and get the help she needed. This incident is a powerful reminder that awareness and compassion from ordinary people can make all the difference—sometimes even saving a life.
