An eight-year-old child was killed in a horrific incident in Wimbledon this morning, with a police officer crying as she broke the news.
Police said a woman in her 40s was arrested on suspicion of killing someone by reckless driving after the accident.
Only an eight-year-old child was killed in the incident, while another 15 were injured.
Police were called to The Study Prep School on Camp Road in Wimbledon after hearing reports of a car crashing into the building.
Images taken at the scene show a large Land Rover near where it crashed into a wall and came to rest. According to locals who spoke to reporters, the girls’ school was holding an outdoor end-of-year tea party.
Met Police PC Commander for South West London Clair Kelland was visibly moved as she broke the terrible news.
She said a traffic accident at the study prep school on Camp Road resulted in emergency personnel being called just before 10 am. They sent several of their officers to the area as well as paramedics from the London Ambulance Service and the London Air Ambulance. A number of the injured received first aid from police officers and colleagues from the rescue service. She continued, her voice breaking, “Unfortunately, an eight-year-old girl died on the spot.” Their thoughts are with her family at this very difficult time.
According to John Tucker, Chair of Governors, the tragedy has had a profound impact on the school community, as one would expect. The school has so far refused to say anything further.
Sharon Maher, the school’s new headteacher, was seen shaking hands with Helen Lowe, who was standing next to Mr Tucker.
After the emergency was declared, 15 ground ambulances and two air ambulances were dispatched to the school.
According to John Martin of the London Ambulance Service, they sent multiple resources, including specialist critical care paramedics, the London Air Ambulance, and 15 ambulances.
A major incident has been announced. 16 people were treated on the spot. Unfortunately, they heard that an eight-year-old cub had died.
The family of the young woman who sadly lost her life has the Prime Minister’s sincere condolences, according to a statement from Downing Street. His thoughts and prayers are with everyone injured or involved in the terrible tragedy that happened at Wimbledon this morning.
