During his shift in Chesterfield County, Virginia, Gaskin went above and beyond to ensure residents of the remote area received their packages on time. Gaskin had no idea how important his work was until the pandemic came and stopped America. But when the pandemic ravaged Virginia, he realized his job was more important than ever, as more people than ever relied on him to deliver products while they were safe at home.
Residents of Gaskin’s daily route had a surprise for UPS deliverymen last week. During his daily shift, he saw a line of cars along the road. This was not his usual observation. People stood in front of their cars, at least six feet apart, as recommended by the CDC. As Gaskin drove his brown UPS truck through town, these individuals waved and applauded.
People carried signs praising the hard-working delivery man. Two children held up a sign that said, “Hallsley loves you, Anthony.” When he saw the marks, he realized that the whole show was done for him.
The residents of the small Virginia suburb felt that Anthony deserved recognition and knew that UPS wouldn’t do it for them.
“Even though his truck lacks sirens and his uniform provides no additional fire protection, Anthony Gaskins is considered a hero around Hallsley,” Patty Friedman later said in an email to WTVR. “Through COVID, Anthony has continued to work, delivering a record number of packages to our door, over 180 times to date.”
Cynics would argue that Gaskin was simply doing his job. Patty and the other residents of Hallsley were wiser.
“I wanted to personally thank him for how much he helped me feel welcome when I moved in during the pandemic,” she continued. “It was terribly lonely and he was always the highlight of my day.
The community organized the event and blew Anthony away with their show of appreciation for his efforts.
“Hundreds of Hallsley residents lined the road waiting for Anthony to turn the corner,” Patty told WTVR. “Hundreds of Hallsley residents arrived on bikes, on foot, and in over 75 cars lined the road waiting for Anthony to turn the corner.” “A humble man, he needed some talking but he ended up driving his truck down the road as kids and adults held signs, shouted his name, honked their horns, and rang bells.” Gaskins’ bosses even showed up to give him a present.”
Gaskin’s superiors also joined the event to present him with a gift. Their presence underlined the recognition of his exceptional commitment at a time when his role was more important than ever. As Gaskin slowly drove his truck down the road, he was met with a symphony of gratitude, tangible confirmation of the difference he had made.
