Jake and Mary Jacobs celebrated their 70th wedding anniversary last year, showing their enduring love in the face of many challenges.
Mary, a white woman, and Jake, a black man from Trinidad, fell in love in 1940s Britain. Despite opposition from both society and Mary’s family, including her father’s declaration that they would not welcome her home if she married Jake, they remained committed to each other.
When they first met at a technical school during the war, they bonded over a common interest in literature. Jake’s relationship received negative feedback and Mary’s father banned her from seeing him. After Jake returned to Trinidad, they corresponded. Jake proposed to her after he returned to the UK, and they married in 1948 without the help of her family, despite the objections of their relatives.
In the early years of their marriage, landlords refused to rent to a black person, so Jake and Mary experienced severe discrimination and difficulty finding housing. “When I came to the UK I faced abuse every day,” says Jake.
They persisted despite prejudice and financial difficulties. When Mary gave birth to a stillborn child at eight months, they experienced tragedy but helped each other. Mary gradually built a solid life and became an assistant principal, and Jake worked at the post office.
Things improved over time and Solihull became their home.
Despite the difficulties, Jake and Mary look back with no regrets. “The bias was unwavering,” Jake recalls. Their enduring love is proof that love is stronger than all challenges.
