A young mother’s decision to bring her child as a date to prom has garnered widespread attention and mixed reactions. Melissa McCabe, who became pregnant at 14 and gave birth to a son Arthur in November 2020, proudly refers to him as her “little blessing”. It was essential to her that Arthur be a part of her special day, the senior prom, despite the challenges that came with it.
Melissa and Arthur’s heartwarming story began when she couldn’t secure a babysitter for the prom. She was faced with the dilemma of wanting to attend the event and at the same time provide care for her child. The solution she found was unconventional and touching – she decided to take her son as a date to prom. Melissa dressed Arthur in a tiny suit, making him look adorable and dapper. The unexpected duo turned heads and raised eyebrows when they arrived at the event.
A 16-year-old video she posted of him as her “prom date” later became extremely popular on TikTok.
She told the Liverpool Echo: “I wanted him to be part of my prom day but no one could take him when the prom came around. I suited him up and went with him.”
Every teacher praised him for looking attractive.
It was fantastic to have him with me when I went to have my photo taken because we don’t really have any beautiful photos of the two of us lately. He loved everything, but most of all he loved food!

Most of the support I’ve gotten has been pretty positive, which is amazing because it’s coming from strangers.

A former Ridgeway High School student is eager to remove the stigma associated with having a teenage child.
I had Arthur at 15, Melissa said. I kind of did it on my own with the support of my brother and sister-in-law because his dad wasn’t really involved. Apparently, I was quite young when I found out I was expecting. It was hard because I was told I was ruining my life and wouldn’t get good GCSE grades. People always make such interesting comments when I’m out with him. People often think he’s my younger brother, but when I tell them he’s not, their perception changes drastically. Especially since it’s obvious that their strategy was to get married first and then have kids, the older people find this annoying.
Despite the animosity that sometimes comes with being a teenage mother, Melissa was pleased with the amazing response she and Arthur received when they appeared at the prom at Thornton Hall on June 30.
It was great to have complete strangers come up to her – some of whom I don’t even normally talk to – gushing about how adorable Arthur and I are.
“My instructors at the school gave me the best support I could have asked for,” the student said. “My deputy head and my form teacher have been amazingly helpful throughout.
They are the ones who supported me in the difficult days of motherhood. After completing her GCSEs last month, Melissa was offered a place to study health and social care at college in September.
While she is proud of what she has accomplished as a teenage mother, she is incredibly grateful for the support she has received from her brother and sister-in-law, who have been a huge help since Artur was born.
I’m proud of myself because I thought that was it when I found out I was pregnant, she continued.
I believed that I wouldn’t be able to go back to school, but after doing some research, I found out that there are strategies to make this happen. Now that I have a place booked I am looking forward to starting college in September.
As Melissa prepares to head off to college, she embodies resilience and hope for young parents facing similar challenges. She has shown that the road to success can be unconventional, but it is achievable with dedication and unwavering love for your child.
