Martha Stewart proves that age is just a number
Stewart is one of four stars on the cover of this year’s Sports Illustrated Swimsuit issue, including Megan Fox, Kim Petras, and Brooks Nader.
Martha Stewart is a multi-talented woman who is now the cover model for the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit issue.
Along with Megan Fox, Kim Petras, and Brooks Nader, the 81-year-old lifestyle mogul serves as one of four models on the publication’s cover this year. Stewart refers to the performance as “once in a lifetime”. But he jokes that the timing is odd.
Stewart laughs as she exclusively tells PEOPLE, “It should have been 30 years ago.” That would be fantastic. Even though I didn’t set it as a goal for myself, once I was asked, I was like, “Let’s do it!”
Stewart says that such an extended swimsuit was significant for her and something she feels is meaningful for every woman. She appears in a range of swimwear in the magazine and hits newsstands on May 18.
“It’s important to take on challenges, whether they’re beauty challenges, intellectual challenges, or even philanthropic challenges,” she says. It’s a great pleasure for me to get out there and do that. And that is a contribution that not everyone would make.
Ruven Afanador, who photographed the businessman and TV personality for his magazine in the 1990s, took the images for the spread. Their previous interactions made her work better with the “magnificent” photographer once again on this assignment.
Stewart appears in some amazing locations in the Dominican Republic in his photos. She talks about the many locations where her photos were taken that took place in one “one long fashion day,” including splashing in the water while polo horses marched past her and in natural backdrops that allowed her and her swimsuit to steal the stage.
Stewart claims that in order to feel her best in front of the camera, she’s stepped up her regular beauty and wellness rituals to prepare for her dazzling day.
She writes: “I continued to get regular beauty treatments and was very careful about what I put in and on my body (and still do because it made me feel good). I did Pilates three, maybe four times a week and I had no drink — no alcohol for two months.”
Additionally, Stewart says, “I got a tan a couple of days before the shoot, which isn’t something I usually do. When you’re underwater in that azure water, it’s great. I got a little bit of a tan and it looked nice and natural. I’m really into the photos satisfied.
Stewart has swimwear from Monday Swimwear, Saint Laurent, Eres, and other brands. He describes the selection process as fascinating but laborious.
The night before the shoot, “there were so many things to try on,” she explains, “I tried on all the swimsuits and clothes.” I had to grin and bear it because I was poked, pulled, and straightened, making it impossible to be modest.
But if you assumed Stewart would be wearing stylish camouflage and more muted clothing, you’d be wrong. Stewart was against the idea because she was trying to show off her “good cleavage”.
I’m not completely covered; those are legit swimsuits, she tells PEOPLE. “Kaftans are not my style. These are extremely glossy photos. I would have loved to wear a very skimpy bikini, as would any of the models, but for my age what I was wearing was acceptable. This is not a cover-up though – you I don’t like
“Our goal with the 2023 issue is to continue to spark engaging and thought-provoking conversations,” says MJ Day, SI Swimsuit editor-in-chief, calling Stewart “a legend.”
“Our issue stayed the course and highlighted the women of today, the people defining the future, while the industry vacillates over its arbitrary concept of beauty. Starting with our cover models, who collectively represent the most aggressive women from many walks of life.” who continue to forge their own paths according to their imaginations, this year we present an incredibly diverse collection of women.
The SI Swim cover stars were completely under wraps until Monday’s big reveal, just like in years past. In fact, Stewart admits to PEOPLE that she didn’t know the identities of the other three stars on the cover. She admitted that she told very few people about the photo shoot, but did tell her daughter Alexis. She was sworn to secrecy about her personal role in the magazine.
“I was severely reprimanded!” Stewart recalls being advised that she could not reveal her cover to anyone. He continues, laughing, “I can’t do this, I can’t do that.” Close friend Snoop Dogg is among the many people who have been kept in the dark about her pictures; Stewart expects Dogg to be pleased.
He predicts that he’ll either think it’s cool or that you should have worn a shirt.
Stewart appreciates that Sports Illustrated chose to put her on the cover because she represents sensuality at any age and has become a cultural icon.
“They sell swimwear, travel, beauty, and s*x,” Stewart claims. “I believe we succeeded”
