On April 18th, Mackenzie would have turned 10 in Shakopee, Minnesota, and her mother sent out a large number of invitations to celebrate her birthday. The parents of those invited were silent for several days. Jenny, Mackenzie’s mother, wondered if it was because her young child had speech and learning difficulties.
She then sent out an invitation via Facebook to the mothers of the invited children. She noted how very loving Mackenzie was, how she longed to have friends at school, and how she often played alone in the school playground.
As a mother it worries you because you want your children to be happy, Jenny continued.
I am contacting mothers of daughters between the ages of 9 and 11 who would like to attend a birthday party tomorrow from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Just drop by and wish her a happy birthday; you don’t have to stay very long.
The mothers of the two girls messaged that they would be attending shortly after the message was posted. Then many people started sharing Mackenzie’s mother’s message. It became popular. Channel 4 contacted her and asked her to feature the birthday girl in a story. Followed by Channel 9. Jenny received a flood of messages from individuals offering donations of food, entertainment, performers, and gifts as word of the story spread.
Suddenly, more than 100 children and adults showed up, planning to attend Mackenzie’s party. However, they didn’t have enough room for everyone. Afterward, the mayor connected with Jenny and invited her to celebrate her birthday in one of the parks. Perfect.
More than 500 people, young and old, came to the park to help Mackenzie celebrate her birthday. This all happened as a result of a caring mother’s request for a small act of kindness for her daughter’s birthday from a select group of friends.
