Introducing Tommy, a remarkable brown Swiss steer from the stunning Alps who has found a loving home on a picturesque farm in the heart of New England. Tommy’s story is a heartwarming tale of love, friendship, and the lasting bond between a remarkable animal and a compassionate human.
Tommy, a majestic Brown Swiss, comes from one of the dominant breeds in the dairy industry. In 2010, Tommy was granted a reprieve from the auction by his caring owner, Fred. Fred, a man with a remarkable talent for raising calves, soon discovers that he has brought an extraordinary and unique presence into his life.
According to Laurie, Fred’s daughter, “Tommy was named after Tom Brady, who was the quarterback of our beloved New England Patriots football club at the time.
That’s right, the GOAT QB is honored in the name of this GOAT star!
Now you might be asking, “Is Tommy dinner material?”
But hold your horses – or in this case, your cows.
Laurie quickly clarified the situation:
Laurie made it clear right away that Tommy was a beloved family pet.
“People often joke about eating Tommy, but when his time comes, he’ll be buried on this farm,” he continues.
Tommy is a gentle giant with a heart of gold; don’t let its huge size and powerful horns fool you.
“Despite his size and huge horns, Tommy has a calm and peaceful demeanor,” says Laurie.
Tommy is a Brown Swiss and Brown Swiss are known for their good nature.
His relaxed demeanor can perhaps be attributed to the fact that he is an ox, which is a castrated bull.
Bulls are notoriously difficult, but not our Tommy.
Tommy is popular with children and adults alike.
He has a unique way of lowering his head so that even the smallest hands can pet him.
“He’s always very aware of where my dad is and keeps a close eye on him whenever he’s around,” Laurie says.
Tommy is an amazingly kind and welcoming animal due to Fred’s obvious love and care for him.
So what does a day in life of Tommy look like?
Well, there’s a lot of chewing involved!
Tommy eats three or more times a day and his diet consists of a whopping 35 to 40 gallons of water, about 75 pounds of hay, and about 30 pounds of dry grain.
One thirsty ox, over there!
Tommy is resting because of a sore leg, although he likes to roam the meadows and nibble on the fresh green grass.
“He’s been worked on by hoof specialists and vets, but if they have hoof problems, it’s a long, slow healing process,” says Laurie.
“Especially a heavy animal like Tommy.
Don’t worry though; Tommy has his favorite foods to keep him satisfied.
He loves apples, so Fred goes to great lengths to supply him.
“My dad would go to the market and spend all his money on apples,” Laurie recalls. Tommy is even able to shake off the untamed apple trees in the field.
And if apples are out of the question?
You can do it with vegetables or cinnamon rolls.
When Tommy isn’t eating, he likes to relax by taking long naps and chewing on candy bars.
However, as Laurie writes, he “slowed down quite a bit” as he got older.
Due to his size, people often ask what Tommy’s “job” is.
“I always explain that Tommy’s job is to keep my dad young and active, and he takes his job seriously,” explains Laurie.
“My dad is almost 80 and still outshines most men half his age.
The story of Tommy and Fred captivated people all over the world.
When Tommy was recognized by Guinness World Records, Fred was ecstatic.
“Those two are legendary and I knew this was a chance to capture them in history and share this amazing couple with the world,” Laurie says with pride.
