Yevgeny Anisimov, a father in Russia, is raising his son Misha, who has Down syndrome, alone and is determined to eradicate the stigma associated with the condition.
At the age of 33, Evgeny is on a mission to convince others that people with Down syndrome are equally deserving of love and affection. After his wife made the difficult decision to leave because she didn’t feel up to handling their son’s condition, he stepped into the role of single parent.

Their lives took an unexpected turn when a doctor told them just 1 minute and 39 seconds after birth that their baby had Down syndrome. Evgeny candidly described his initial emotions and thoughts in an interview with Bored Panda, saying, “I didn’t know what to do when I learned that my son might have Down syndrome. I believed that my immediate responsibility was to suppress my emotions, engage .” my mind and supporting my wife because I thought it would be even harder for her.”

However, he soon understood that he had to accept this new reality and take responsibility for his son. In his studies of the condition, he found that people with Down syndrome are successfully integrated into society in Europe and can live and work on their own.

Yevgeny was determined to be there for his son despite his wife’s decision to leave. He was adamant that he couldn’t leave his son in an orphanage because that would be cruel. He said: “I never thought of leaving my son in an orphanage, that would be inhumane.” In the end, he and his wife divorced, and Yevgenij is now raising Misha alone.
