Matt Accurso was living his dream life, starting a family with the love of his life, Lauren, who had been in his life since high school.
All Matt Accurso wanted in life was to start a family with the woman he’s loved since high school. And they believed their perfect family would be flawless when they learned Lauren had a son. When the father of three little girls had to see his high school sweetheart leave due to complications giving birth to his son, the fairy tale ended.
Ali Rose, Naomi Belle, and Layne Louise were the three girls born out of Lauren and Matt’s 20-year marriage. The Accurso family was excited and eager to have a son. According to the couple’s pastor, Matt McCloghry, there was great excitement because they had three girls, boys.
But no one could stop what happened during Matthew’s birth. Lauren now lives with Jesus at home. According to their GoFundMe account, Lauren died during childbirth due to what was until now considered an unavoidable and extremely unusual medical issue. “There are no words that can adequately express the pain and sorrow felt by so many,” it reads.
While grieving for his wife and the mother of his four children, Matt had to watch his newborn boy fight for his life while attached to tubes and machines. Infant Matthew suffered severe brain damage from birth complications, causing his young body to struggle with cognitive function and growth.
When Matt heard the news, he said his first thought as Matthew’s father was to pick up his sweet baby and get him as far away from the machines, drugs, life support, and hospital smells as possible. As life sometimes does, he was brought back to the reality that his only son, the sweet boy his wife had carried so diligently and tenderly for 9 months, was in a situation his father could not fix. He hoped to carry him to their family condo on the beach and let his sisters, grandmothers, and cousins wash his little body of all his weaknesses.
Matt sat helplessly by his son’s side as he was hooked up to the machines, desperately trying to hold on to what he could. The only source of comfort in this situation, according to the father, could be “only his heavenly father, who from the beginning gave Matthew air in his lungs.”
When Matt lost his wife and realized he might lose his son too, it was a heavy burden to bear and he began to think about miracles.
“Some people may hear our story and think, ‘What a tragedy.'” Some people may ask, “Where is God when we need him?” Some people say miracles don’t happen. But do you want to know the reality? Matt said: “Matthew is truly a miracle. According to him, his baby was a ‘living miracle’, born as doctors struggled to save his mother’s life and his own.
Then, according to Matt, Matthew surpassed all expectations by opening his eyes, breathing on his own, pumping blood through a strong heart, freely moving his limbs, and even making squeaking sounds. His body began to function gradually and he even managed to grab his finger, which was supposed to be impossible.
