The case has drawn national attention, in part because she is the mother of Savannah Guthrie, co-anchor of the Today show.

The recovered footage shows a masked, armed individual outside Guthrie’s residence during the early morning hours surrounding her disappearance. In still images shared publicly by FBI Director Kash Patel, the suspect appears to be tampering with a video doorbell camera while dressed in a balaclava, gloves, a zipped jacket, and a backpack.
Authorities say the video had initially been damaged or rendered inaccessible. Working alongside the Pima County Sheriff’s Department and private-sector partners, investigators were able to recover footage from residual backend data after recording devices were allegedly tampered with.
“The video was recovered from residual data located in backend systems,” Patel said in announcing the release. “Working with our partners, law enforcement has now uncovered new images showing an armed individual appearing to interfere with the camera at Nancy Guthrie’s front door on the morning she vanished.”
Guthrie has now been missing for more than ten days. Authorities confirmed that two ransom deadlines demanding $6 million in bitcoin have passed. The note, however, reportedly did not specify what consequences would follow if payment was not made.

While investigators have not publicly identified a suspect—or confirmed the individual’s gender—online observers quickly began dissecting the visible area around the suspect’s eyes.

Former FBI agent Mark Harrigan, speaking to the New York Post, noted that the suspect’s handling of the firearm appears unusual.
“This is a very non-conventional way to carry a firearm,” Harrigan said, pointing to the weapon’s positioning at the front of the suspect’s body. “Typically, you’d want a firearm concealed during a crime. Having it exposed draws attention.”

“I work in Tucson for GLS,” he said, adding that while he may have delivered a package to the home in the past, he denied any involvement in the disappearance.
