In 1993, tragedy struck when her home in Benoit, Mississippi was destroyed, leaving her and her two children searching for a new place to call home. Little did she know that this moment of adversity would set the stage for one of the most remarkable housing experiences in history.
From disaster to victory
When Ussera’s husband died unexpectedly, she and her two children were left homeless and looking for a new one. She originally considered buying a trailer as a solution to her financial problems.
However, she soon found that she could not afford a house big enough for her growing family. Bob, Ussery’s brother-in-law, and an air traffic controller, then presented a new concept for staying on an airplane.
Ussery was intrigued by the idea and went to see a dismantled Boeing 727 when he fell in love. what is the best? Even with shipping, the plane cost only $2,000 in total. Ussery named her new plane “Little Trump” in honor of the fact that Donald Trump also had a private Boeing 727.
Ussery began the difficult work of converting the aircraft into a distinctive and comfortable dwelling with determination and ingenuity. She started a project that would require a large time and financial commitment for less than $30,000 (now about $60,000).
She intentionally landed the plane on her property with the nose facing the beautiful lake to ensure stability throughout the renovation. Concrete was used to properly anchor the tail surface in place.
Ussery immediately began tearing down the stunning 1,500-square-foot interior as soon as the foundation was laid. The approximately 138-foot-long aircraft has 76 windows that provide plenty of natural light.
Ussery made significant changes to the aircraft’s design to realize his vision. Although the original windows were broken, the installed air conditioning kept the house comfortable.
She installed new floors throughout the aircraft and prioritized upgrading the insulation. Ussery also cleverly found ways to save space by redesigning the plane’s bathroom and overhead storage. The result? was a well-planned living area that made the most of the space.
An unusual oasis of comfort
Ussery focused her attention on creating a spectacular and cozy living space after the primary renovations were completed. Three bedrooms, a comfortable living room, a fully functional kitchen, and even a practical laundry room are now features of the newly renovated aircraft.
Ussery went above and beyond to make sure her updated jet included unexpected amenities like a phone and an oven. The master bathroom she rebuilt from the cockpit was undoubtedly the crowning achievement of her design.
Ussery ingeniously added a soaking tub to make the most of the breathtaking views outside. Everyone who enters the complex will feel as if they are floating on water thanks to the carefully thought-out layout.
Ussery’s success is completely unique because she made this remarkable metamorphosis all by herself. She and her children lived in the converted airplane from 1995 to 1999 and enjoyed the benefits of their special home.
Ussery subsequently decided to turn her creation into a public museum because it was so satisfying. Unfortunately, disaster struck when the plane moved a short distance, causing it to fall off the carriage and crash.
Even though Ussery’s Boeing 727 is no longer flying, its legacy still fascinates and motivates people.
