Authorities believe she may have died on August 11 with an incredibly heartbreaking and unexpected cause of death.
Chirinos was a pioneer in Venezuelan athletics, participating in five consecutive Olympic Games, starting with the 1992 Barcelona Games and ending with the 2012 London Olympics. Her career, spanning two decades, also saw success at the Pan American Games, where she won a silver medal in 1990, two golds and a silver in 2002, and two more silver medals in 2003.
At the time of her death, Chirinos was living in Las Vegas and working in a hotel.
She was reported missing early last week and authorities launched a search that eventually ended when her body was found in her home.
According to FOX, the cause of death was determined to be choking on solid food lodged in her trachea.
