He was my loss of work as an actor and told many of his colleagues to suffer from digestion and fatigue. But when shooting the chosen one, Robby opened and talked to his star Steiger about his heart state.
“He said that if something happened to my heart, he never let anyone know,” Robby recalled. “It’s a career suicide.”
The actor became very ill in the laughter set and soon understood that he had to seek medical care. Robby was about to jump from a teenage idol to an established star in Hollywood – so he didn’t want to tell anyone about what the doctors found on their hearts years ago.
But after almost collapsing on the spot during the filming of Die Laughing, he was forced to act. All of this led to undergoing an open heart operation in 1984. The surgeons repaired the valve defect and, according to reports, the procedure went “very well”.
Robby was released from the hospital after a month – but that wasn’t over.
Unfortunately, Robby’s chronic heart state would become a recurring source of worries and trouble. During his first operation in 1984, he received a beef valve transplant – but had to be replaced after 15 years. In 2000 he underwent the second operation, but shortly afterwards the former star of adolescents began to have difficulty breathing.
Today Robby underwent four open heart operations to solve recurring problems and repair previous damage to his heart. Recurrent problems with Robby’s heart took a toll on him – privately and career. The balance of these two things, while fearing his life, was not easy. And that barely helped Robby’s initial attempts to hide his health problems.
But thanks to his wife, he stretched for 40 years.
