The tragedy that unfolded that fateful morning in Fort Wayne, Indiana was a heartbreaking reminder of how quickly life can change.
The mother of four young children who died in a mobile home fire in Indiana managed to escape the burning structure without the children but later asked an adult living in the home if they were inside with him. Jessica Mann, 30, was asleep in her bedroom when the Fort Wayne facility caught fire early Thursday morning. She managed to escape by forcing the air conditioner through the window.
Travis Garrison, 18, who was present during their painful final minutes, claimed her four children, who were sleeping in the front bedroom and were aged 2, 3, 5, and 10, died screaming. Garrison was sleeping in the third bedroom with his sister, Audrey Kistler, 24, and her 17-year-old boyfriend, Samuel Barnett.
Waking up to the fire, Garrison tried to leave through the front door, but the locking mechanism was broken. He claimed that as his sister and her companion fled through the window, he ran out the back door. Mann rushed to Garrison when all four adults were outside and asked where they were. She approached me and three or two others and asked how her children were. I informed her that according to Garrison they were still inside.
The residence was already on fire when Mann jumped on top of the car to try to rescue them through the window, according to Garrison. Garrison claimed he tried to force open the front door but was unsuccessful. He could constantly hear children screaming. He was unable to stop screaming. They made every effort to free the children. They made every effort.
She was unable to see or even breathe. She went on to say that the second explosion made the situation worse. She claimed she heard the children begging for help and a dog howling, adding that she cut her own hands in an attempt to free the children.
She sprinted over there and started breaking windows in an attempt to help them escape. She continued: “They didn’t have to go up and help, they could just stand there and watch someone’s house burn with their children inside.”
Garrison claimed he heard the gas tank hissing before the flames worsened. The fire had already spread throughout the mobile home when Fort Wayne firefighters arrived at the scene at 8:33 a.m., according to sheriff’s office and fire department affidavits.
Firefighters were able to get the fire under control enough to enter the home and find the children’s bodies around 8:56 a.m., according to a fire department news release.
May the souls of these little angels rest in peace.
Tragedy reminds us how fragile life can be and how important it is to cherish every moment with our loved ones. May the souls of these four little angels rest in peace and may their memory live on in the hearts of all who knew them.
Some of the neighbors offered to help with the rescue, while others called 911. A neighbor named Shelby Wright said she went outside after hearing the explosion. She described how much smoke was present.

Other neighbors who were contacted questioned the parents’ decision to abandon the children, but Garrison claimed they did everything in their power to save them. All were trying to re-enter, according to Garrison. They couldn’t get into the house. The fire got out of control. Too much smoke was present. They could not return to the house.
