It was an unusually quiet afternoon in a Cooktown, a species where time seemed to slow down, and even the breeze carried the air of mystery.
When four retired friends walked along an almost empty street, they could not shake the feeling that something unexpected would happen. They knew a little that they were going to come across an agreement so incredible that they would have them questioned by reality.
Four older men in retirement went down the street in a cooktown as they turned the corner they saw the sign that reads:
“Bar of old timer – all drinks 10 cents.”
They exchanged skeptical glances, barely believed in their eyes, and decided to enter and thought they had to be too good to be true.
When they entered, the bartender, the older gentleman, warmly greeted them in a voice he carried around the room.
“Come in!
They looked around and noticed that the bar was fully supplied. Every man decided to order a Martini.
In no time the bartender stood in front of them four perfectly chilled martini – shake, undamaged – and said, “It will be 10 cents, please.”
The men stared at the bartender, then at each other, absolutely distrustful.
They paid their 40 cents, enjoyed drinks, and quickly ordered another round.
The bartender again served fourprofessionaly Martinis and repeated, “That’s 40 cents, please.”
Now their curiosity has improved. Each of them enjoyed two Martini, but their overall account was still under the dollar. In the end one of them could not resist the question:
“How on earth can you afford to give such high-quality drinks for just 10 cents?”
The bartender laughed and replied, “I’m retired from Sydney. It was always my dream to own the bar. Last year I won $ 25 million in the lottery, so I decided to open this place.
The men were amazed at his story and continued to sip Martinů. Theyy couldn’t help, but they noticed that a group of seven people were sitting at the other end of the bar. None of them had drinks in front of them, nor had he ordered anything all the time.
One of the men pointed to them and asked the bartender, “What is happening to those people?”
With a smile, the bartender replied, “Oh, just waiting for a happy hour – when the drinks are half the price!”
Conclusion
Four men mixed and realized the irony of the situation. They were here, enjoying the highest quality drinks for just 10 cents, but some people were still sticking to an even better solution. For the first time, they shook their heads and lifted the glasses to the last toast.
When they finished their drinks, they could not help, but appreciate the generosity of the bartender and the unexpected adventure they found. It was a reminder that sometimes the best things in life come from the most unexpected places – and that even with all the happiness in the world, some people will always wait for a better solution.
With a smile on their faces, four retirement friends came out of the bar and still laughed at the thought of those who were patiently waiting for a happy hour, they did not quite know that they were at the happiest place of all.
