“Actually, do you know what? I never even open it. Do you want to do it together?” he asked.
Meedith encouraged when Luke tried to open the old latch. Eventually it appeared. When he picked up the lid, his jaw dropped.
Inside, neatly arranged, there were several gold bars. He picked up one and found a certificate confirming that he was their legal owner.
“Dad! Is that real gold?” Meedith gasped and touched one of the shiny bars.
“Yes, sweetheart, and weighs 100 grams,” Luke said, still in shock.
“That’s a lot, isn’t it?”
Luke did not answer – he was too busy with the processing of what he saw. Then Meredith stretched and pulled out a small envelope.
“Dad, there’s a letter inside!” She shouted and handed it over to him.
Luke opened it and discovered the key and address for Milford Bank.
“What do you think that is opening up?” Meredith asked.
“It looks like a safety box,” Luke murmured.
When Lidia returned home, he told her everything. She encouraged him to visit the bank and see what’s inside.
Property
At the bank, the manager, Mr. Paxton, immediately recognized the key.
“Oh! You must be the grandson of Elizabeth! I wondered if you ever came,” he said warmly. “Your grandmother was one of our most valuable clients. She arranged this security box years ago.”
Inside the safe Luke’s breath caught in his throat.
The box contained 50 large gold bars, each of which weighed a kilogram. Along with them were diamonds and other rare gems.
“Your grandmother did not trust banks at digital age,” Mr. Paxton explained. “She believed in storing wealth in tangible property. Do you have to withdraw anything today?”
Luke shook his head in disbelief.
“No, I just had to see it,” he replied, stunned.
That night he returned home and told Lidie everything. When he realized the depth of his grandmother’s wisdom, he called his brothers for the first time in years.
“I’m sorry, as I acted,” he admitted. “And you won’t believe what your grandmother did.”
Tom and Aidan laughed.
“I knew my grandmother wouldn’t leave you with anything!” Said Aidan. “She just wanted to teach you a lesson.”
