Grandson Discovers 91-Year-Old Grandma’s Untapped Travel Desires and Embarks on a 63-Destination Adventure of a Lifetime

Is there something in your life that you’ve perpetually desired to pursue but never found the opportunity? A destination you’ve yearned to explore but consistently postponed, citing “next summer” or “in a year or two”?

Have you ever delved into the reasons behind these perpetual delays? One elderly Ohio resident, 91-year-old Joy Ryan, had led a life largely devoid of extensive travel experiences.

Her most adventurous journey involved accompanying her husband to a fishing spot in Okeechobee, Florida. When her grandson, Brad Ryan, stumbled upon this revelation, he resolved to unveil the splendors of their own nation to his beloved grandmother. Brad approached Joy and proposed a visit to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, gauging her interest. Joy responded with an enthusiastic “Yes,” and soon, they embarked on their shared adventure.

Together, they journeyed to the park, immersing themselves in the natural beauty it had to offer. Brad observed Joy’s growing affection for the environment and began contemplating the possibility of exploring other destinations with her. Joy, once again, expressed her willingness to embark on further adventures. This prompted Brad to initiate research into other national parks they could explore.

In total, there are 63 national parks, with 62 located on the mainland, in Alaska, or Hawaii, and the American Samoa National Park situated in the South Pacific. Brad recognized that the mainland parks were conveniently clustered together, forming a substantial route around the country. He initiated a conversation with his grandmother, proposing the idea of visiting all of them, and Joy eagerly seized the opportunity. In just a few years, Joy transitioned from a traveler with minimal experience to someone who had explored every corner of her homeland.

The grandmother and grandson duo traversed mountains and deserts, witnessed majestic whales, and even embarked on daring white-water rafting adventures. “She went white-water rafting at the age of 91,” Brad marveled, clearly impressed by her bravery. “They were class 3 rapids; she’s braver than me!” Following their visits to all 62 nearby parks, Brad and Joy embarked on an extensive journey covering thousands of miles, culminating in their exploration of the American Samoa National Park.

“American Samoa is a close-knit island community deeply rooted in family values,” Brad explained when asked about their choice to conclude their journey there. “I believe there’s a poetic beauty in concluding our adventure in such a place.” While their exploration of America may have reached its pinnacle, their wanderlust remains unabated. For their upcoming adventure, the pair aspires to witness the wonders of Kenya and perhaps explore some of Canada’s national parks. Brad reflected that amidst their diverse adventures, some of his fondest moments were shared while traveling in the car, engaging in heartfelt conversations.

“We embarked on our road trips together, delving into our life stories,” Brad recounted. “Joy shared some of the challenges she’d faced, confiding in me about experiences she’d never disclosed to anyone before. In turn, I shared the trials and tribulations of my own life.”

Joy, in her wisdom, emphasized, “It’s a choice whether you opt for a gloomy or a sunny day. So, wear a smile and let everyone know you’re relishing every moment to the fullest.”
