What Starts as an Ordinary Day Reveals the Darkest Neglect — and the Brightest Compassion
When a tiny infant suffering from extreme neglect entered the care of strangers, no one could have predicted the journey that would follow: a fight for survival, a battle against medical odds, and a display of love that would forever change a family. This is a story that tests your emotions and leaves you questioning how a child could be left in such peril — and how hope can emerge from heartbreak.
Foster Parents Adopt Shaken Baby Survivor After Heartbreaking Neglect

When I became a mother for the first time, my greatest concern was making sure my child would always be safe, loved, and cared for. Stories of child abuse and neglect leave me shocked, heartbroken, and angry.
While some parents’ actions stem from complex struggles, no child should ever be endangered by neglect. Thankfully, extraordinary foster parents step in when biological parents fail. One such story moved me deeply — the journey of LeAnne and Eric with Easton Matthew.
LeAnne and Eric made the brave decision to care for a young boy suffering from shaken baby syndrome. His biological parents had neglected him, choosing sleep and convenience over feeding him.
When LeAnne and Eric learned about Easton’s situation, they embarked on a heart-wrenching journey that would ultimately become a story of resilience, love, and devotion. They shared their story so others could witness the power of compassion and perseverance.
“The doctor handed us a fragile, tiny 2-month-old boy, barely over seven pounds, and said, ‘Take him home, love him, feed him… or in a few days, this could be a very different story.’ For the first time in my life, I was terrified to bring a baby home!”
Eric and I married on a crisp fall day in 1996 and dreamed of raising two children. By 2000, our suburban fairy-tale life was blessed with a beautiful boy and girl. Inspired by a radio show about raising children with special needs, Eric felt we should expand our family. In 2005, we welcomed another son, and soon after, another daughter, completing our lively household.
Despite the chaos of daily life, we felt called to foster children — those taken from everything familiar through no fault of their own. After two years of prayer, study, and family discussions, we obtained our Foster-to-Adopt license and began placing children in our home. By 2017, we were seasoned foster parents, well-versed in matching children to families that could best nurture them.
One evening, after just reuniting a foster child with her family, we received a call:
“LeAnne, we have a 2-month-old baby boy who’s failing to thrive. He’s in the hospital. Can you take him?”
Without hesitation, we agreed. When we arrived, we found a fragile infant unlike any we had seen — blue-tinged, frail, and extremely underweight.
His head appeared large for his tiny body, veins visible through his skin, soft spots pronounced. The sight was devastating. Yet, the moment I held him, I knew we would do everything in our power to protect him.
We quickly learned his story: diagnosed with Non-Organic Failure to Thrive, he had gained weight during a hospital stay but was neglected at home. Nurses’ visits revealed he was often unfed, lying in soiled diapers, ignored by his biological parents. Detective M intervened, recognizing the life-threatening neglect and opening a case that would ultimately save him.
Bringing him home, we faced immense challenges. He could only tolerate tiny amounts of formula at a time, needing feeding every two hours around the clock. His body was so weak that even basic movement exhausted him. Despite our constant care, he remained frail — lacking muscle tone, unable to support his head, unresponsive to cries. This was a stark reminder of the toll neglect had taken.
Through careful monitoring, weekly pediatric visits, and therapy guidance, we watched him slowly gain strength. Concerns grew about his neurological state. An MRI confirmed he had suffered head trauma consistent with shaken baby syndrome. His biological father had shaken him in frustration, causing lasting brain injury. Easton was later diagnosed with hypotonic cerebral palsy, dysphagia, and dyspraxia — conditions he will manage for life.
Despite these challenges, Easton fought bravely. With constant care, therapy, and love, he began to achieve milestones once thought impossible. By two and a half, he could walk with braces. Though his body tires easily and he faces ongoing medical needs, his spirit remains unbroken. He is a happy, determined child who refuses to let limitations define him.
After extensive court proceedings, testimony, and relentless advocacy by dedicated caseworkers, Easton was granted permanent custody and adopted by us just before Thanksgiving on his third birthday. He became Easton Matthew Stadler, our fifth child — a child we were meant to love and nurture.
Many say Easton is blessed to have us, but the truth is: we are the ones truly blessed. Fifteen years ago, we never imagined a radio program about children with special needs would lead us to a remarkable boy who would teach us the power of resilience, love, and hope.

Conclusion
Easton’s story is both heartbreaking and inspiring. It illustrates the devastating impact of neglect and abuse while celebrating the life-saving difference foster parents can make. Through tireless care, medical intervention, and unconditional love, Easton not only survived but began to thrive.
For LeAnne and Eric, he is not just a child they rescued — he is a profound reminder that love, dedication, and hope can overcome even the darkest beginnings. Their journey is a call to action for communities everywhere: children in need deserve guardians who will fight for them, and sometimes, that fight transforms everyone involved.
