“I feel a lot of pain and sadness for her, but I’ll take something good from it,” Kari told KCRA.
The Duane family of El Dorado Hills, California decided to keep the venue and catering. Instead, they graciously invited the homeless townspeople to partake in the bountiful meal.
The mother of the bride argued that it was only fair to return favors to those who deserved them. After all, there are so many more things to be thankful for in life.
She observes the arrival of her new visitors and their delight in the sumptuous gourmet feast, even as her grieving daughter chooses to stay at home.
“When I found out on Monday that there wasn’t going to be a wedding, it seemed like of course it was going to be something we would do to give back,” she explained.
The first visitor, in Kari’s memory, was a woman who lived in a shelter with individuals who were either too old to work or had financial difficulties and could not afford rent. She was thirty minutes early. Kari understood then that it didn’t matter if no one else showed up. “At that point, I was like, if she’s the only person coming tonight, then it was worth it,” Kari said.
She was pleasantly surprised to see other people at the gathering.
Rashad Abdullah was one of them; he came with his wife Erika Craycraft and their five children and called the lunch a “blessing.” Abdullah and his family were able to eat three meals that day, unlike on other days when they were unable to do so. Simply put, there was plenty of food in the entire hall. For Abdullah, as well as for his entire family, it was a blessing to attend such a feast.
Getting out and doing something new with his family during hard times or hardships was truly a blessing, he told KCRA.
Erika, his wife, also expressed gratitude to the Duanes for their generosity.
To miss something that’s so important to you and then offer it to someone else, she continued, “is really giving, really kind.”
Erika Craycraft, another guest, thanked Quinn and her family for their compassion, saying that even though they were the ones who lost things, they still had a heart to help others.
“Losing something that’s so important to you and then giving it to someone else is really giving, really kind,” Craycraft said.
Although she enjoys the food at the shelter, homeless mother Tamara Dotson said she will never be able to replicate the food they were given that day. “This doesn’t come from our kitchen, you know. Leo, our beloved chef, wouldn’t cook anything like this,” Dotson declared.
The banquet was made possible by the hotel’s four-star Grange restaurant, which provided an excellent spread. The menu included fish and steak, appetizers, salad, and gnocchi, originally intended for 120 wedding guests. The generosity extended beyond the banquet as an expensive honeymoon trip to Belize was included as part of the high cost of the wedding.
