Inside one of the Rainbow Terrace Apartments, Cordale Sheffield, a 30-year-old stepfather, was spending time with his two stepchildren, ages 10 and 11. What happened next has left an entire community shaken—and in awe.
The Moment Everything Changed
Cordale was thrown from the apartment by the blast. Disoriented and injured, he scrambled to his feet, only to realize what every parent dreads: the children were still inside.
His stepson managed to leap from a window. But his stepdaughter—frozen in fear—couldn’t move. Time was vanishing. Smoke filled the air. The building groaned.
And Cordale didn’t hesitate.
Despite the burns already blistering his skin, he ran back into the inferno to get her. According to his sister, Cierra Algawi, that second entry was when the fire claimed the most—his skin, his hair, and nearly his life.
“He had to go through the flames again to save her,” Cierra told News 5 Cleveland. “And he did.”
A Hero’s Toll
Cordale survived—but barely. He’s suffered third-degree burns over 92% of his body. Doctors have already removed all of his skin. He faces a grueling recovery that could stretch six months or more in the hospital.
The children, too, were injured and remain under sedation. Their mother had been working when the explosion tore through the apartment on June 23.
Captured Courage
The first footage Cierra saw of the fire didn’t come from authorities—it came from a viral video online. In it, Cordale walks away from the building, skin blackened, body barely recognizable.
“He looked like a zombie,” she said, “but he was alive—and he saved them.”
Cordale’s selfless act has captured hearts across the country. A GoFundMe campaign set up by his family has already raised over $40,000 to help cover his extensive medical care.
A City in Shock
Cordale wasn’t the only one who acted bravely. In another video, a woman is seen tossing a toddler from a second-story window to waiting arms below. Nearby residents helped firefighters locate trapped neighbors, while first responders worked tirelessly to battle the flames.
In all, the fire damaged 44 homes and displaced nearly 100 residents. The Cleveland Fire Department estimates the damage at $3.5 million. Officials are still investigating what caused the initial explosion.
Temporary shelters, like the Zelma George Recreation Center, have opened their doors to families in need.
