Jeffries Signals Opposition
House Democratic Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) announced Monday that he will oppose a Republican-backed spending bill designed to reopen the federal government. This announcement signals another partisan standoff as the shutdown enters its second month.
The legislation, which cleared the Senate late Sunday by a 60–40 vote with bipartisan support, was widely viewed as a key step toward ending the government closure that began on November 1.
Jeffries insisted that House Democrats could not support the measure, arguing that it fails to address essential Democratic policy priorities.
Senate Support and Leadership Questions
Despite Democratic opposition in the House, the bill is expected to pass, given the Republican majority, and proceed to the President for signature.
Jeffries also expressed strong support for Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.), affirming Schumer’s leadership amid frustration from some left-wing Democrats over the compromise designed to reopen the government.
“Yes and yes,” Jeffries said when asked whether Schumer has been an effective leader in the Senate and whether he should retain his position.
Together with other top Democratic leaders, Jeffries plans to oppose the stopgap funding bill when it reaches the House later this week. Schumer similarly voted against advancing the measure in the Senate on Sunday.
