Ike Turner, Tina Turner’s son, had not spoken to his mother in decades before her death.

Ike Turner Jr., a renowned Grammy-winning producer and performer, has shared the stage with his father throughout his career. During his early years, Ike Jr. experienced a fractured connection between his biological mother, Lorraine Taylor, and his father. The introduction of R&B icon Tina Turner into their lives marked Ike Jr.’s first encounter with a mother figure, as his father married Tina.

Growing up, Ike Jr.’s childhood was marked by turmoil and instability. The Turner family faced tragic circumstances, with one of Ike Jr.’s brothers tragically taking his own life and his father succumbing to a heroin overdose. Recently, on May 24, 2023, Tina Turner, Ike Jr.’s stepmother, passed away. The HBO documentary titled “Tina” showcases Tina’s retelling of the Turner family’s journey, shedding light on their life story.

During the year 1962, Tina Turner welcomed Ike Jr., one of her husband Ike’s two children, into her family through adoption. Ike Jr., born in 1958, grew up under the care of his stepmother, Tina, who played a pivotal role as his sole mother figure. Inspired by his father’s musical legacy, Ike Jr. embarked on a path as a musician, following in his footsteps.

In addition to adopting Ike Jr., Tina also extended her love and care to his brother Michael, who was born in 1959. Michael became part of the Turner family through adoption, one year after Tina and Ike’s biological child, Ronnie Turner, came into the world. While Ike Jr. and Ronnie have achieved public recognition, Michael has chosen to lead a private life, resulting in limited accessible information about him.

Ike Jr. has emerged as an immensely talented musician, earning widespread acclaim for his musical prowess. His exceptional abilities garnered recognition at the esteemed 49th Annual Grammy Awards, where he was honored with an award for his remarkable contribution to the best traditional blues album category. Titled “Risin’ With The Blues,” this critically acclaimed album, released on September 12, 2006, competed alongside notable recordings by renowned artists such as Celine Dion and Tab Benoit.

Tina held great importance in the lives of Ike Jr. and his sibling Michael during their formative years. Despite being their stepmother through adoption, she assumed a maternal role in their upbringing. Their father and Tina exchanged vows for a duration of 16 years, spanning from the early 1960s to the late 1970s, signifying Tina’s nurturing presence in their childhood.

Ike was involved with six women, Tina being one of them. Despite the ever-changing presence of mother figures in the lives of Ike Jr. and Michael, they always recognized Tina as the true constant. However, due to irreconcilable differences between Tina and Ike, their marriage ultimately led to divorce.

With their parents frequently absent, it was the housekeepers who effectively raised the children. After enduring years of violence and cruelty inflicted by Ike, Tina made the difficult decision to leave, permanently separating herself from her children and her husband.

Ike Jr., under the tutelage of his parents, honed his musical talents. In his formative years, they made the decision to withdraw him from school and steered him towards a supportive role in their respective fields. Meanwhile, Ronnie, the only biological child, set his sights on a path in the world of acting.

Ronnie’s aspirations materialized when he landed a significant role in the film “What’s Love Got to Do with It,” which chronicled his mother’s profession and her courageous journey to emancipate herself from Ike. He entered into matrimony with Afida Turner, and their union endured for a remarkable span of 15 years until his unfortunate demise in the preceding year, leaving behind a precious child as their enduring legacy.

As mentioned before, Ike Jr. absorbed a wealth of knowledge about the music industry from his renowned parents. He skillfully applied that knowledge to shape a successful career, earning him a Grammy award. Despite his tender age, Tina and her spouse entrusted him with significant responsibilities. Ike Jr. revealed that at the age of 13, his father pulled him out of school, and he found himself overseeing their recording facility and accompanying them on tour.

In addition, his father assigned him the task of meticulously keeping track of the earnings from their tours, to the point where his hands would become stained with gray ink from counting the money.

Ike Jr. encountered challenging circumstances while working under his parents’ authority, as he occasionally became the target of abuse. He vividly recalled a distressing incident where his father subjected him to physical assault during his early days as his mother’s sound engineer.

Ike generously shares the Grammy award he received with his child, symbolizing their bond and shared achievement. Ike’s Grammy wins include the Best Traditional Album in 2007 and the Best R&B Vocal Performance by a Group in 1972. Notably, the latter accolade was bestowed upon an album created by Ike Jr. for his father.

Following his Grammy success alongside his father, Ike Jr. established a musical group called The Love Thang. He expressed his dedication to doing the right thing and always presenting himself in the best possible manner. In 1987, Ike Jr. released the innovative electronic-funk album titled “Hard Labor.” Carol Simmons joined him as a co-producer, contributing to the creation of the album’s eight captivating tracks.

After making a daring escape with only a handful of pennies during the 16th year of her marriage to Ike, Tina never set foot in his home again. Ike Jr. disclosed that his last conversation with his mother, Tina, occurred around the year 2000, and none of his siblings had any contact with her thereafter.

According to Ike Jr., Tina embarked on a journey of emigration and found her new home in Europe. Reports suggest that she tied the knot with German producer Erwin Bach in 2013, and the couple settled in Kusnacht, Switzerland, located in close proximity to Zurich.

Tragically, Tina’s earthly journey came to a close on May 24, 2023. A representative for the legendary Queen of Rock and Roll conveyed the news, stating that she departed this world serenely after a prolonged and undisclosed illness. At the time of her passing, Tina had reached the age of 83, leaving behind a remarkable legacy.

In December 2007, Ike’s life came to a tragic end due to a heroin overdose, marking the culmination of his prolonged battle with heroin addiction that spanned several decades.

Reflecting upon his own misdeeds, Ike Jr. offered a heartfelt apology to his father, expressing remorse for his actions. He also expressed a sense of disappointment that Tina did not embrace the opportunity to forgive Ike as well. Additionally, Ike Jr. mentioned that his brothers Ronnie and Michael were faring relatively well, although Michael required medical attention. However, it is confirmed that Ronnie has since passed away, and there is limited information available regarding Michael’s current status.

Following the tumultuous years filled with dramatic events in Ike’s family, their story was transformed into a compelling television documentary titled “Tina.” The release of the film marked the conclusion of Tina’s career and signaled her withdrawal from the public eye, seeking solace away from the reach of the US media. Despite the documentary being well-crafted and performed, many felt that the narrative remained incomplete.

Interestingly, the HBO program did not portray Tina in the role of a mother. It was believed by some that she intentionally omitted this aspect of her life as it did not cast her in a favorable light. Ike Jr. and Michael, in particular, expressed their disappointment at being excluded from the project. In the documentary, the boys are only glimpsed through archival footage, while notable actresses Angela Bassett and Oprah Winfrey take on prominent roles. May Tina find eternal peace.
