Ilhan Omar Under Fire as GOP Seeks to Strip Her of Committee Roles Following Kirk Assassination Comments
The political aftershocks of Charlie Kirk’s assassination have surged onto Capitol Hill, where Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-Minn.) has become the latest flashpoint.
Her recent comments in an interview have sparked a Republican backlash, with critics accusing her of undermining Kirk’s memory during a period of national mourning.
Now, GOP lawmakers are moving to make their anger count—Rep. Buddy Carter (R-Ga.) announced Monday he will introduce a resolution to remove Omar from her House committee assignments, including her post as ranking member on the House Subcommittee on Workforce Protections and her seat on the Budget Committee.
🔹 GOP: “Omar Crossed the Line”
The push comes in response to Omar’s remarks in an interview with progressive media outlet Zeteo, where she questioned Kirk’s legacy and called out Republicans for what she described as political sanctification in the wake of his assassination.
“There are people out there framing him as someone just looking for a civil debate. But the truth is, his statements and actions are on record. We can’t pretend otherwise,” Omar said, referencing Kirk’s past controversial views on race, slavery, and Juneteenth.
Though Omar later clarified that she found Kirk’s death “mortifying” and condemned political violence, Republicans dismissed her clarification as insincere.
Rep. Carter responded sharply:
“Disparaging Charlie Kirk—a God-fearing conservative voice—just days after his assassination is beyond disgraceful,” he said. “The radical left has normalized answering speech with violence. Enough is enough.”
He further accused Omar of justifying political violence, stating:
“Someone who excuses the murder of a political opponent has no place on a House committee.”
🔹 Omar Responds: “They’re Twisting My Words—Again”
In a statement posted to X (formerly Twitter), Omar pushed back:
“I did not excuse violence. I criticized hypocrisy. My full comments made clear that I was condemning the assassination. But once again, Republicans are using tragedy to silence dissent.”
This isn’t Omar’s first clash with GOP lawmakers. Since joining Congress in 2019, she’s repeatedly come under fire for past remarks—some condemned as antisemitic or dismissive of 9/11—making her a frequent target for conservative censure.
Democratic allies argue that GOP efforts to remove her from committees are driven by politics, not principle.
“This is nothing more than performative outrage,” said one senior Democratic aide. “They’re not defending Kirk—they’re weaponizing his death.”
🔹 Conclusion: A New Front in an Old Battle
Rep. Ilhan Omar now faces the threat of being stripped of her committee roles, as Republicans seize on her post-assassination remarks to reignite long-standing efforts to marginalize her influence in Congress.
While Omar maintains that her words were misinterpreted and stresses her condemnation of violence, the political cost may be steep. The resolution against her underscores the partisan tensions and cultural divides that continue to shape—and inflame—Washington.
As the nation mourns Charlie Kirk, the battle over who gets to speak, and at what cost, rages on in the halls of power.
