With each test, a piece of his parents’ soul died…
When Nolan’s parents received the devastating news that broke their hearts into a million pieces, their beloved son was only two tender years old. It was a diagnosis no parent should ever have to face – their precious child had been stricken with a cruel disease. At an age when his life should have been filled with carefree walks in the park and joyous meetings with friends, fate set Nolan on a different path characterized by long hospital stays, grueling chemotherapy, and relentless bouts of nausea and discomfort. With each medical test and each needle poke, it felt like a piece of his parents’ soul was being chipped away, eaten away by the relentless onslaught of their child’s illness.
This family faced a difficult battle with a terrible disease. They knew it wouldn’t be easy, but none of them ever thought of giving up.
Nolan’s condition worsened after a year of battling rhabdomyosarcoma, a rare soft tissue cancer. His mother understood that nothing was going to get better. Her lone warrior was exhausted after a while. He made it and his delicate body had taken too much. Just four weeks after Nolan underwent open chest surgery, the family was informed of the cancer’s progress and how the tumors were pressing on his bronchial tubes once he stopped taking food and fluids.
When the son’s time with his mother and family was about to end, how could his mother tell him? The four-year-old was too young to understand what was happening or why his illness was no longer treatable.
He was too young for his life to end and she just didn’t want to think about losing her devoted son.
Nolan’s journey and battle with cancer have been chronicled on a Facebook page set up by his parents, Jonathan and Ruth, to keep everyone updated on his progress. And today, two months after Nolan entered heaven, his mother paid tribute to him and revealed her most private thoughts to everyone.
From the moment of his birth, Nolan showed himself to be a true fighter. He knew his time on earth was limited and it broke his heart to witness this little angel arranging his own funeral and writing his will.
As we lay in bed together, he wrote out what he was going to leave for each of us, chose a bearer, decided what he wanted everyone to wear, and even wrote down what he wanted them to remember him by – which of course was a cop.
Ruth reflects on her son’s dying moments. A brave child gave his mother a gift she will never forget.
However, on that particular day, she left his side to use the restroom. Despite the fact that Nolan’s uncle was standing by his side, the young man continued to stare at the bathroom door, wanting to watch over his mom.
Nolan closed his eyes as she closed the door. His right lung collapsed, his oxygen levels plummeted, and he fell into a deep sleep. The young man was surrounded by medical personnel.
Pretty sleepy, Ruth. It lacks all sensation.
When her child handed her the most amazing gift, Ruth ran to him and wouldn’t let him go. It was truly a miracle.
“At 11:54 p.m., my angel took a breath, opened his eyes, smiled at me, murmured, ‘I love you, Mom,’ turned his head in my direction, and died. I sang ‘You Are My Sunshine’ into Sergeant Rollin Nolan Scully’s ear when he died He made a happy face when he woke up from his coma and told me he loved me. My son died a hero. He was a warrior who died with complete dignity and love.
Nolan will always be remembered as the bravest young man who died and showed us how much he cared about others around him. He was a truly special child who had been through a lot in his short life. However, he did a lot. Our hero, that is.
“Now I’m afraid to shower myself. I’m left with nothing but an empty shower rug where a beautiful, flawless baby once slept while waiting for its mother.”
Nolan truly died a hero, a young warrior who fought a fierce battle with courage that inspired all who knew him.
Nolan will forever be remembered as the bravest of young people, a child who faced adversity with an indomitable spirit and who showed deep love and concern for those around him. His journey, marked by unimaginable pain and suffering,
We are deeply saddened by the passing of Nolan’s parents. Peace be with you, man; we will never forget you.
