Laughter Behind Bars
Prison life can be predictable, but sometimes it’s the little oddities that catch you off guard. On a bus headed to a correctional facility, three inmates were about to discover that what you bring—or how you react—can make all the difference. And in this case, one inmate’s choice hinted at humor and mischief far beyond the ordinary.
Three convicts were being transported to prison. Each was allowed to bring one item to pass the time during their sentence.
“So, what did you bring?” one asked.
The second convict revealed a box of paints. “I want to become the Grandma Moses of jail,” he said with a grin, eager to fill his time with art. Then he asked the first convict, “What about you?”

The first pulled out a deck of cards. “Cards,” he said. “Poker, solitaire, gin—you name it. I’ll never get bored.”
The third convict, sitting quietly with a sly smile, finally caught their attention. “Why the grin? What did you bring?”
He held up a box of tampons and chuckled. The others looked puzzled. “Tampons? What do you plan to do with those?”
He pointed to the packaging. “Well, apparently I can go horseback riding, swimming, roller-skating…” leaving them speechless and trying not to laugh.
Later, a new inmate noticed something unusual at night. As the lights went out, his cellmate shouted over the bars, “Number twelve!” The whole cell block erupted in laughter. Moments later, another yelled, “Number four!” — more laughter followed.
Confused, the new inmate asked, “What’s going on?”
The older prisoner explained, “We’ve all heard the same jokes for years. Now we just shout the number instead of telling the full joke.”
Curious, the new inmate tried it himself. “Number twenty-nine!” he shouted. This time, the entire cell block doubled over in laughter.
When the laughter subsided, he turned to his cellmate. “Why was that one so funny?”
Wiping tears from his eyes, the older inmate said, “We’d never heard that one before.”
Conclusion
In prison, humor adapts to the environment—and sometimes the simplest things, like numbers or unexpected items, create the biggest laughs. Even behind bars, wit, cleverness, and a little mischief find a way to shine, reminding everyone that laughter is a universal escape, no matter the circumstances.
