Usha Vance’s Summer Reading Challenge: Inspiring a New Generation of Readers
Second Lady Usha Vance rarely seeks the spotlight, but when she does, her authenticity shines. In a recent interview with Fox & Friends host Ainsley Earhardt, Vance opened up about life at home with Vice President JD Vance and their children, coinciding with the launch of her 2025 Summer Reading Challenge for students nationwide.

A Childhood Shaped by Books
Growing up surrounded by books, Usha credits reading as a cornerstone of her childhood. “My parents were hands-off, but they always encouraged us to learn,” she recalled. “Books were everywhere — by the bedside, on the tables. They led by example.”
Now, in her own home, Usha and JD continue the tradition, fostering curiosity in their children. Their boys, currently obsessed with insects after a dinosaur phase, fill the house with books about bugs. “There are a lot of books in our house I’d never read,” she joked, reflecting the balance between parental guidance and children’s interests.

Launched on June 1, the initiative invites students in grades K–8 to read 12 books by September 5. Participants log their reading, reflect through writing or drawing, and submit their logs for a chance to win prizes, including a trip to Washington, D.C. for the national winner and a parent or guardian.
“Adventure, imagination, and discovery await — right between the pages of a book,” the challenge’s welcome letter reads. Every participant receives a certificate and small prize, with entries also entered into a nationwide drawing.
Usha explained her motivation: “My goal is to find small ways to use my platform to counteract big problems. This isn’t the end-all, be-all — but it’s a start.”
A Nationwide Initiative with Personal Roots
Inspired by the summer reading programs of her own youth, Usha designed this challenge to be free, accessible to children across the country, and easy to follow.
A downloadable PDF packet includes rules, a reading log, and a waiver, blending the feel of a school project with the excitement of a national program.
Throughout the interview, Usha remained sincere and focused on impact rather than publicity. “We hope you’ll join us this summer,” she said. “Let the reading adventures begin!”

Usha Vance’s Summer Reading Challenge reflects her values, blending education, curiosity, and family traditions into a program that reaches children nationwide.
