John Edward Jones was 26—a medical student, devoted father, and seasoned cave explorer. Known for his passion for spelunking, Jones regularly sought out the narrowest passages to challenge himself. But during that fateful visit with his brother Josh and friends, he slipped into a tiny, uncharted tunnel barely 10 inches high and 18 inches wide. Headfirst, he wedged himself so tightly that turning or retreating became impossible.
Panic quickly set in as Jones found himself trapped upside down in a passage that seemed to close in on him with every breath. His brother rushed to the surface, igniting a massive rescue effort that would last nearly 28 grueling hours.
