James continued his work even after he divorced. In “Gunsmoke”, Arness met Janet Surtees, his second wife. Glen Alden’s wife was Janet. Janet’s co-worker was Alden’s wife at the time.
Janet was afraid to meet TV personality James but did it anyway because her son was a fan.

James, 88, died of natural causes on March 16, 2014, according to the Los Angeles Times. Janet was present at his bedside. He is survived by Rolf, Janet, and Janet’s stepson James.
