Jamie Lee Curtis made some very depressing comments about her close friend and Curb Your Enthusiasm star Richard Lewis, who died Tuesday at age 76 of a heart attack.
In addition to her role as a witch in Halloween, the 65-year-old actress co-starred with the comedian in the four-season sitcom Anything But Love (1989-1992).
After hearing the tragic news of the actor’s death, she posted on her main Instagram profile on Wednesday. It was Bette Midler who broke the news initially.
Curtis shared several old photos of herself with Lewis on social media, as well as a lengthy note in which she thanked the late celebrity for being “the reason I’m sober.”
After battling opioid addiction, Jamie celebrated 25 years sober this month.
“I have just heard that my friend Richard Lewis has passed away. I still vividly remember my exact location on Sunset Boulevard when I noticed the billboard for his stand-up show. I applied to audition for the role of Marty Gold, my closest friend and potential boyfriend, during the casting round of the ABC pilot Anything But Love.
“I thought he looked good. Strong women can’t really make people laugh, but someone did it for me. His mispronunciation of “Bundt cake” made me laugh out loud, but he understood that part.
Jamie remarked, “He blew everyone else away,”
They wrote back to say, “The chemistry with Richard was so great,” even though they didn’t pick up the pilot for the love triangle drama. Could the original pilot be remade? We ended up producing the show for two years that way.
“He also did stand-up comedy, but he hated it in front of real people. In contrast, I thought it was fantastic.
In close-ups, he hid his marks on door frames, objects, and even my face. He also carried a clipboard with scribbled lines all the time. Turns out he’s a pretty good actor. It’s deep and incredibly funny.
She continued, “We mourned together the passing of our friend and bandmate Richard Frank and the passing of our friend and producer John Ritter.”
“In his last text message to me, Richard was hoping I could get ABC/Disney to release another box set of episodes of the series,” she wrote to fans.
Jamie continued, “That’s also why I’m sober.” He was helpful to me. He did me a favor for which I will always be grateful.
“He found love with Joyce, and that, of course, was the most important thing to him besides sobriety,” Joyce Lapinsky noted of his wife. Writing this brings tears to my eyes.
It’s a special way to express gratitude to a kind and funny man. May you rest in laughter, Richard. Finally, she exclaimed, “My Marty, I love you, Hannah!”
Jamie also expressed her grief over the passing of her longtime friend and former actor in a second post.
She included lyrics from the Anything But Love theme song along with another old photo of herself and Lewis.
“On the third and final season of the television show ANYTHING BUT LOVE, which aired on ABC for several years, the great singer-songwriter JD Souther wrote this beautiful theme song,” Curtis said.
“Find it on YouTube and listen to it. If not, I wrote it for you.” My friend Richard Lewis is getting them today.
The song “If We’d Never Met/And The World Moved On Without Us/Just Like We Never Were” she shared would leave us searching for the next big thing and trying to stay afloat.
“Everything but love will do and hearts that beat like thunder.” Anything but love would be enough for everyone but you.
Curb Your Enthusiasm star Larry David and other celebrities and social media users paid tribute to the late Richard Lewis.
“He’s been like a brother to me for most of my life,” he told HBO. “Richard and I were born three days apart in the same hospital.
“He was the funniest and nicest person at the same time, which doesn’t happen very often.” “But he made me cry today and I’ll never forgive him,” the comic said in an interview with Variety.
“When I was young, my biggest crush was on Richard Lewis,” writes Cheryl Hines, who co-starred with Lewis on the popular sitcom.
“There was no one funnier or prettier than him on stage.” It was a dream come true for me to work with him on Curb Your Enthusiasm.
“Over the years, I learned more about Richard and the gifts he gave. He was one of the kindest individuals I have ever met and I fell in love with him because he was funny.
“Especially in the last few years,” Cheryl continued, “he took the time to tell the people he loved how much they meant to him.” He expressed his love and importance to me between takes on Curb.
