According to Mirror.co.uk, in the woods of Splendora, Texas, on his eighth birthday in 1998, a young man tied Robbie Middleton to a tree, doused him with gasoline, and set him on fire.
The youth wandered home while engulfed in flames before falling into a ball of fire on the sidewalk.
His mother discovered him on the verge of passing out, with flesh hanging from his ankles and horrible blisters covering his entire body. He had no eyelids and 99 percent of his body was covered in burns. The only uninjured part of him was his legs.
The Middleton family was told by hospital staff that Robbie would not survive, but he recovered after more than 150 operations and numerous skin grafts.
Although horribly injured and scarred, the child immediately gained notoriety for his unwavering optimism.
Middleton, who supported burn victims and routinely provided assistance to female patients, was quoted by Mirro.co.uk as saying: “The past is the past”. You have to let it go, she said.
He identified his assailant as Don Collins, who was 13 at the time; however, the court was unable to determine a motive and released Collins.
Middleton suffered fatal skin cancer from third degree burns when she was 20 years old. As Middleton lay dying in a hospital bed, seeking redress and accepting a deposition, he again identified Collins as his attacker.
However, Middleton also made Collins’ intention to silence him in this video. Middleton claimed Collins raped him just 17 days before he was set on fire.
Middleton recalls, “Don grabbed my shoulder and threw gas in my face, and I don’t really remember anything after that.”
Middleton died in April 2011. Because he died of burns, investigators ruled his death a homicide. His family was then awarded 150 billion dollars in damages.
His family filed a lawsuit on his behalf. The 29-year-old was given 40 years by the jury, the Chron reported. Given the longest sentence allowed for his age at the time, Middleton finally saw justice because a 1998 law prohibited 13-year-olds from being prosecuted as adults.
