Reeves was born in Beirut, Lebanon, on September 2, 1964. His mother worked as an English performer and costume designer, while his father was a Hawaiian geologist.
His father left the family when Reeves was just three years old, and his parents separated shortly afterward. Raised by his mother, Reeves moved frequently during his childhood. The family relocated several times — first to Sydney, then to New York City — before eventually settling in Toronto, where he spent most of his early years.
The last time Keanu Reeves saw his father was when he was 13, during a visit to the Hawaiian island of Kauai.
As a child, Reeves was diagnosed with dyslexia.
“Because I struggled with reading, I wasn’t a very good student,” he once said.
He attended four different high schools. In a 2008 interview with the Daily Mail, Reeves spoke about why his high school years were so challenging.
“I wasn’t exactly the most well-oiled machine in school,” he reflected.
“I went to four different high schools in five years,” Reeves said. “Academically I did alright — I was good at English and creative writing. I was also on the chess team.”
And, of course, he stood out in acting. In fact, his talent earned him a place at Etobicoke School of the Arts, a school focused on performing arts.
Even there, though, Reeves still struggled to feel like he truly belonged.
“It was a very small school, and I suppose I just didn’t fit in,” he told the Daily Mail.
“I had conflicts and run-ins with staff. The principal and I didn’t really see eye to eye. I was one of those ‘Why?’ kids — always asking questions about everything. I couldn’t stop, even when it got me into trouble.
“I wanted my autonomy, and if someone tried to impose something on me, then we were going to have a problem.”
Before long, Keanu Reeves’s rebellious streak led to consequences he couldn’t avoid. At just 16 years old, he was expelled.
“It’s a terrible letter to receive, being told you can’t come back to school next year. Being asked to leave was very upsetting,” Reeves said.
Yet, in the end, it became the push he needed to pursue acting more seriously. In another interview, the 55-year-old recalled: “I started taking acting classes at night.”
Everything changed
“It just seemed like the right thing to do. A lot of it came from respect for acting. I worked on some Stanislavsky techniques and experimented with sense memory. I started showing up at auditions, landed a few roles, and joined community theater. Eventually, I found an agent.”
By his late teens, Reeves had moved to Los Angeles, taking whatever roles he could find. Then, in 1989, everything changed.
A quirky time-travel comedy called Bill & Ted’s Excellent Adventure turned him into a star. But Reeves didn’t want to be remembered as just another Hollywood joke — he wanted more depth.
During the 1990s, he proved himself in powerful dramas like My Own Private Idaho, held his own alongside Al Pacino in The Devil’s Advocate, and became an action star with Speed. But in 1999, he stepped into a role that would change cinema.

Just two years later, Syme died in a car accident. Years earlier, Reeves had also lost his close friend River Phoenix to an overdose in 1993.
Many people would have collapsed under such grief. Reeves carried on, quietly moving forward while holding his pain in silence.
