As we contemplate the changes that have transpired in Hollywood over the years it’s hard to overlook the transformations that have occurred. These alterations have captured the attention of one actor who is now openly sharing his thoughts on the matter.
Kevin Sorbo, renowned for his portrayal of Hercules, in the 1995 film bearing the name once embodied a masculine character. However, at 65 years old he has recently shed light on a movement that has been reshaping the film industry for two decades now.
His perspective was presented in an article titled “Reimagining Hollywood’s Masculinity.” Sorbo contends that Hollywood has been engaged in an anti-masculinity movement for the past twenty years, a notion he finds disheartening. He articulated, “Everywhere we look, strong, confident, self-assured women are overshadowing passive men who seem to fade into the background, into obscurity, and into the past.” He alleges that fathers have become the target of satirical humor in woke Hollywood, depicted as inept individuals who contribute nothing to their families or communities.
Some individuals counter this viewpoint by citing the presence of masculine characters in recent superhero movies, which have dominated the industry. However, Sorbo holds a different perspective.
He argues that today, we seek male role models on screen who we would want our sons to emulate and our daughters to date. Sorbo believes that modern society has a skewed understanding of masculinity. He acknowledges, though, “On one hand, we embrace the normalization of androgynous figures, akin to Billy Porter, who don skirts and flamboyant dresses.” He also takes a dig at actor Timothée Chalamet, celebrated as a fashion icon by British GQ, for his attire that deviates from traditional male fashion, without delving into transphobic remarks.
Sorbo raises concerns, about men getting caught up in habits like alcohol, drugs, video games, pornography and other forms of entertainment. However he doesn’t provide evidence to support his claims. He emphasizes the importance of embracing virtues like bravery, protection, responsible fatherhood and selfless service. Sorbo believes that these virtues become challenging to uphold when men excessively indulge in pleasure seeking activities.
According to Sorbo it is vital for Hollywood to continue featuring heroes for boys to look up to. However his statements have sparked reactions as some find them excessive and disconnected from societal values. The ongoing debate surrounding this topic leaves us uncertain, about its outcome.
