In the wonderful town of Mentor, Ohio, a beautiful tradition has been developing for the past five years. It all started when Doris Vehar’s granddaughter, Marissa, was in elementary school. Every morning, when the sun began to rise and the world woke up, Doris went outside. She had a simple but profound ritual – waving goodbye to her beloved granddaughter as she boarded the school bus. Little did Doris know that this everyday act of love and connection would blossom into something truly extraordinary.
As the years went by, Marissa got older and her school bus route changed. She no longer rode the same bus that passed by her grandmother’s house. But Doris, undeterred by the change, continued to stand outside every morning and faithfully wave to the children on the school bus. This made her a lovable figure in their lives—a rare presence that brightened their daily commute.
Doris’ determination to greet children on the school bus, rain or shine, soon earned her a special place in their hearts. She was more than just a friendly face to these young souls; she was “grandma”. The genuine affection and warmth she radiated as she stood by the roadside, waving and occasionally kissing, made her an honorary grandmother to all the children who passed by her every day.
It developed into a habit. According to Cleveland.com, Doris is standing there waving and blowing kisses as the #46 bus passes her house.
“I adore every one of those 35 kids. I see those kids every day, umbrella, snow, wind, sun,” Doris told the Morning Journal.
Doris recently turned 88, and her neighbor Kathy wanted the occasion to be memorable for the elderly woman who greets the young every morning. Kathy informed the bus driver to make it a memorable day in advance with that in mind.
On her birthday, as usual, Doris went to meet the students when she got a surprise. Everyone leaned out of the school bus windows and sang “Happy Birthday” to the woman they call “Grandma.” Kathy, a neighbor, recorded everything and uploaded the video to Facebook.
Currently, a video of the love act of children has gone viral.
“It feels like a beautiful dream. I go out every day to greet the kids. I adore each and every one of them. But there’s something special about this bus this year. I have no idea what has affected me.” They are really adorable, Doris said, according to Cleveland.com.
Here’s a cute video that shows the kids and their “grandma”:
