Kirk Douglas started from scratch
Kirk Douglas was a poor youth born to Russian Jewish immigrants before becoming a famous and wealthy Hollywood superstar. His father moved to Amsterdam, New York.
Not long after, he sent for Kirk Douglas’ mother, his wife, to accompany him. He bought a horse and worked as a rag because he could not get a job because the town did not employ Jews. This meant that he collected, traded, and sold various goods, including rags and old clothes. (1, 2)
Kirk and the couple had a total of seven children – six girls and one boy. The family had a hard life because they were impoverished. For their mother to prepare soup, his sisters begged for bones.
When Kirk was really hungry, he often resorted to stealing food.
“I stole food when I was hungry, like a tomato from the garden or an egg from under the neighbor’s hen.” In the interview, I also cleaned fruits and vegetables from the stall,” he said.
His sisters shared two rooms in their family home, while his parents slept in one. Kirk was sleeping on the old couch in the living room.
Their house lacked a washing machine, stove, and hot water. Still, their mother went to great lengths to provide food and clothing for the children. In addition, Kirk Douglas showed affection to his father, even though he lived far away. As a boy, he had to work very hard to earn his affection and appreciation.
Choosing your own path
In 1934, the award-winning actor completed his high school education penniless. He was a gifted and brilliant boy who longed for a chance to go to college. Left with no choice, he hitchhiked 200 miles to Canton, New York, a friend’s sophomore year at St. Lawrence University. Along with his transcript and letter of recommendation from his English teacher, he carried all of his high school acting honors, essays, and poems.
When he got there, he told the dean why they should want him to attend their university. After his successful application, the dean helped him get a loan. In the next semester, he was the recipient of a scholarship.
While in college, he worked as a shill for a circus and as a hotel and resort employee. He eventually performed to raise money for his education at the Tamarack Playhouse on Lake Pleasant.
At the age of 25, he experienced a major turning point. He met Betty Perske, then 17, at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in Manhattan. Her debut film catapulted her to stardom. She then convinced her director to see Kirk at a Broadway theater. This was his first entry into Hollywood.

First, Kirk had a brief career on Broadway before serving in the US Navy during World War II. But after breaking through in Hollywood, he never returned. The 1946 film The Strange Love of Martha Ivers was his debut film. His first big moment came three years later when he boxed the 1949 Champion. He received his first Oscar nomination for his role as Midge Kelly in the film.

Since then, Kirk Douglas has excelled in various jobs and won numerous awards. It especially excels at creating characters with more sharpness and grit.
He told The Times in 1984: “I’ve always been drawn to characters who are part villains.” “I don’t find it a photogenic virtue.” (3)
Family Life of Kirk Douglas
Of course, Kirk Douglas was not just a Hollywood actor. Diana was the first woman he married in 1943. Peter and Michael Douglas were their two children together. The former became a huge Hollywood star by following in his father’s footsteps. In 1951, the couple divorced.
Kirk Douglas met Anne, his second wife, not long after. Kirk died in 2020 at the age of 103. They married in 1954 and remained so until his death.

Kirk Douglas’ humble beginnings inspired him to give back as much as he could. His goal was to use his wealth to support young people from disadvantaged backgrounds like himself. Anne understood what it meant to fight. She was born into prosperity in Germany, but her fortunes quickly changed after her family fell apart during World War II.
Despite their wealth, Kirk and Anne Douglas never lost sight of their past lives and origins. In addition to sharing their wealth, they wanted to instill a sense of altruism in their children and grandchildren. In response, they established The Douglas Foundation.
The main goal of the Douglas Foundation is to help individuals who cannot help themselves. Its main goal is to improve health and education, promote well-being, and, above all, create new chances for children who will shape our future. Recognizing the current state of the health care system, the Douglas Foundation also provides funding for medical research, technology, and initiatives aimed at improving the level of care provided to nearby areas.” (5)
When Kirk died in 2020, the Douglas Foundation received most of Kirk’s $80 million estate.

Although his son Eric overdosed and died in 2004, his other three boys never received any financial support from their father. Since Michael Douglas is already worth $300 million, he obviously doesn’t need it.
“Kirk’s life was well lived and he leaves a legacy on film that will live on for generations to come and a history of a well-known philanthropist who worked to help the public and bring peace to the planet,” Michael said in a statement following his father’s death. “But to me and my brothers Joel and Peter, he was just Dad.
