He was eighty-five years old. He was a Star Wars actor who appeared in one of the most “memorable” scenes in the film.
Michael Culver, who played Captain Lorth Needa in the 1980 film The Empire Strikes Back, died Thursday after a long illness, his representatives said.
In one of the film’s most famous sequences, Darth Vader uses telekinetic strangulation to kill Culver in retaliation for the Millennium Falcon escaping him.
This morning his representatives released a statement saying: “We are very sorry to have to confirm the death of our friend and client Michael Culver.”
In a career spanning more than half a century, he played iconic roles in films such as Sherlock Holmes, Journey to India, The Secret Army, and, of course, one of the most famous death sequences in Star Wars.
At the start of the new millennium, Michael largely turned away from acting to his political endeavors.
“It was a privilege to be Michael’s agent for ten years and take him to some of the best Star Wars events in the UK and Europe.”
Michael officially died today. He was eighty-five years old. Our hearts ached for him.
Before his rise to Star Wars fame, Culver portrayed Major McBryde in Passage to India and Ernest Clifford in Breakaway.
He was also in Sherlock Homes, Secret Army, and Thriller Armchair.
The London-born actor had a career spanning more than 50 years before retiring from acting in the early 2000s.
Culver’s admirers were quick to pay tribute online as well.
On X, the ex-Twitter, Star Wars Underworld posted: “We are sorry to say that actor Michael Culver has passed away at the age of 85.”
“Culver’s portrayal of Captain Lorth Needy in ‘The Empire Strikes Back’ is what most Star Wars fans knew about him.”
“He also had various roles in many stage, screen, and radio productions.”
Additionally, Jeremy Brett’s Sherlock Holmes podcast included a tribute to Culver.
“Michael has been ill for some time, but that has not stopped this strong, moral man from continuing to live, work, and speak for the causes he fought so hard for all his life,” the statement added.
“Michael was not only an extraordinary actor, but he was an extraordinary person.
His contribution and impact continue to be seen in programs like the one we enjoy, in the causes he passionately championed, and in the lives he improved.
“We thank Michael for all he has given us and our thoughts go out to his family and everyone who knew him at this time.”
