My mother claimed to have seen that every cover of a teen magazine at the checkout featured Leif’s likeness. She told me this when she and her parents went to the grocery store.
The five-year-old American singer-actor was in 1969’s Bob & Carol & Ted & Alice, which became the sixth highest-grossing film of the year. Hollywood, California is where he was born.
After that, the sleepy flaxen-haired beauty starred in Walking Tall and its two sequels. In 1983, he appeared in Francis Ford Coppola’s The Outsiders alongside several other teenagers such as Matt Dillon, C. Thomas Howell, Patrick Swayze, and Tom Cruise.

When Leif Garret performed renditions of popular songs on his first album in 1977, including The Wanderer (Dion), Surfin’ USA (The Beach Boys) and Paul Anka’s Put Your Head on My Shoulder, the crowd went wild.
The world was in Garrett’s hands. The tousled blonde singer embarked on a world tour and his mostly young female fans went crazy the moment they saw him.
“They had to fly me in by helicopter when I was doing a public performance in Sydney, Australia. Then I got into an armored car and drove through the back door of the theater.” I tried to use the lima but the fans almost knocked it over. I suppose it gets their adrenaline going. They simply went crazy. In 1979, Garrett told the New York Daily News, “It’s very strange.”
But despite his songs almost reaching the top of the charts, he had problems with management that made him feel like a “fraud”. For Garrett, the transition to adulthood presented additional difficulties.
“I think I was a good performer from the start, but I wish they would have offered me singing lessons before they ever made a record and did the typical pounding out of a line or a word or whatever,” Garret said in an interview.
“There’s a particular track (I’ve Been Looking For Someone To Love) that doesn’t even sound like me at all. I might even say I wasn’t even on that track. And to me, that’s cheating. It’s like a Milli Vanilli situation, of course except that mine has been mixed up many times with me and someone else.”
After Garrett crashed a car and sent it down a hill in North Hollywood while drunk and high, his then-close friend Ronald Winkler was a paraplegic, Garrett’s career began to decline.
However, this was not enough for Garret and his life continued to deteriorate.
In 1980, a time he describes in his book as
“the pinnacle of poster stardom,” Garret reveled in s*x, drugs, and rock and roll with legendary Queen frontman Freddie Mercury, who at the time was recording the hugely successful album The Game, which included the hits “Crazy Little Thing Called Love” and “Next One Bites the Dust”. Garrett said he became friends with the band, which showed him the real life of a rock star with girls and drugs.
In support of the release of his memoir Idol Truth, Garrett spoke to Fox and stated, “I don’t think I was a very mature 16-year-old.” Being surrounded by people who drank and drank coke made me grow up extremely quickly. Despite being young, I was treated like an adult… And I paid for everything out of my own pocket.”
“You know, I probably have the biggest fan base that I could ever imagine for myself,” he said. Through thick and thin, they have been by my side. And as you know, I got into many difficult circumstances. Many bad decisions were made. However, I also lacked the parental guidance that I should have received at that time.’
Garret is facing multiple criminal charges. After leaving treatment, he had several run-ins with the law, including trying to hide heroin in his shoe and buying drugs from undercover officers.
Garrett worked very hard to try to get back to the top but ended up reverting to his previous behavior. Garrett was chosen to contribute commentary to the comedy show World’s Dumbest, which focuses on the “most spectacularly stupid” criminals, as a result of his entertaining run-ins with the authorities.
The show has also included a number of famous individuals with a history of accidents, such as Todd Bridges, Tonya Harding, Gary Busey, and Danny Bonaduce.
Garrett then landed a major role on VH1’s Celebrity Rehab with Dr. Drew, even though he didn’t want to be on the show. Garrett claimed that the program was the reason for his dramatic relapse, although VH1 vehemently denied this.
In an interview with the Los Angeles Times, Garrett stated, “They asked me for a video of me using it, and I said, ‘I don’t.'” “We really need to get footage of you using it!” they exclaimed. Nevertheless, I allowed myself to be persuaded to expose them with ease.’
Garrett left the show after a production consultant called him out and suggested he was still using, stating, “It’s crazy and I honestly don’t appreciate it.”
Fortunately, Leif Garrett is now clean.
“I spent ninety days in the county jail. Before that, I was in court-ordered treatment when my mother came to visit and said she had stage IV lung cancer. She has no one living with her, so I’ll take care of her.” her, I said. To deal with it, I continued to use. I completed the required 90 days, after which it was like, ‘Handcuff him, bring him in,'” he recalls.
The former teen star says she’s still incredibly appreciative of all her followers.
“I kept every photo or letter that a young lady sent me, talking about me being on their walls and kissing me goodnight before they went to bed,” Garrett told Closer. It’s a little awkward and bizarre, but it’s also really flattering! I’m grateful [to my fans] that I can still do what I love and get paid for it.”
