I just found out while touring the safari park how little I actually know about the vast majority of creatures on God’s planet. There are also a lot of species that I have no idea about.
It wasn’t until I stopped and thought about it a bit that I realized how little most of us really know about the creatures we coexist with. It also includes the brave, the clever, and the downright terrifying.
There is a certain fascination in learning about new creatures, be they fish, birds, mammals, reptiles, or turtles, and how they live, mate, evolve into their current behaviors, and everything in between.
I must be the first to admit that I have never heard of the cassowary, which is sometimes called the most dangerous bird in the world. They come from the jungles of northern Australia, the Aru Islands, and New Guinea. They can weigh up to 180 pounds and their razor-sharp claws can stab people to death.
A quick Google search is more than enough to convince me, even without any prior knowledge, that I would never consider getting one as a pet. That’s certainly the feeling many of our readers have.
Yet it seems that some people do.
One of those individuals was Marvin Hajos, a 75-year-old resident of Florida. He was an activist, a cassowary expert, and the owner of two breeding pairs as pets. But one day, Hajos frantically called 911 to tell them he was seriously ill. The transcript of the call is so terrifying it will make your blood boil.
Sources say Marvin developed an early interest in birds. He grew up working with birds at the Bronx Zoo and eventually became fascinated with cassowaries, considered the most dangerous birds in the world.
During his lifetime, Marvin became an authority on them and lectured on the subject at many American institutions. In addition, he was able to raise two breeding pairs of flightless birds on his property in Alachua, Florida, according to the permit he had.
That being said, Marvin was well-versed in cassowaries and understood the dangers they faced. However, one of the birds he was tending attacked and seriously injured him. According to reports, authorities believed that Marvin’s fatal mistake in 2019 ultimately led to his death.
According to Fox 35, “He was tending to them when he was attacked. Males usually try to break eggs that one of the females had recently laid. Before the attack, Hajos is believed to have tried to remove the eggs and place them in an incubator.”
Hajos was able to contact 911 after the attack and informed the operator:
“Is an ambulance available? I’m bleeding.”
Hajos sadly died from his injuries after being transported to UF Health Shands Hospital. “It appears to have been an accident. From what I can tell, the man was near the bird when it finally fell. They attacked him when he collapsed.”
