A Massachusetts man facing a terminal diagnosis has made an emotional plea to find a loving home for his elderly dog Babs. David Fine, 63, of Plainville, was diagnosed with stage four lung cancer last August, and with just six months to live, his top priority became making sure his beloved dog found a safe place to live out his final years.
Fine shared his story with WJAR, recalling how he adopted Babs, a Shar Pei-Boxer mix, a decade ago. She was abandoned twice before a friend took her in and later asked Fine to care for her in his garage. From that moment on, a bond grew between them and they became inseparable. Fine expressed that Babs is now his most important companion.
“I thought I’d never get another pet because of the pain when they were gone, but luckily it got me through this time,” Fine said. A long-awaited sightseeing trip with Babs by his side They arrive at Mount Rushmore, but Fine’s health deteriorates just 100 miles from Yellowstone, the final destination. Dreamed of a visit.
“I’ve been planning to travel the national parks for over 30 years and when I finally started I was so happy to have Babs with me,” he explained. However, after a series of health problems, including a diagnosis of leukemia, vascular disease, and finally lung cancer, Fine realized that his dream had to end.
“Treatment would be brutal and wouldn’t give me much time. I’ve decided to focus on quality over quantity. The cancer will probably spread, and when it does we’ll end it in hospice. I have to make sure Babs is safe before I leave, he sai.
Despite his condition, Fine remains optimistic. “I’m fine with it. It is. I could try treatment, but it would make me sick and I wouldn’t want to live like this. So I’m just trying to find Babs the best.” maybe home.”
Determined to secure Babs’ future, Fine reached out to local veterans programs and shared his story on Facebook, where it quickly gained traction. She hopes to find a new owner in her community to help Babs transition smoothly into her new life. Unfortunately, his extended family cannot marry her because of their own pets.
“Babs need to be an only pet and would do best in a home without small children. She is well-behaved, intelligent, and trained, although she struggles with stairs,” explained Fine.
He continued: “I want to find someone who is like me – someone who wants a companion to greet them at the door. It’s like finding a home for a child. She is the most important thing in my life. My fate is sealed, but hers is not. I have to make sure he has a good life after I’m gone.”
Fine’s deep love for Babs and his commitment to her future is clear as he faces the end of his life. “I still want to see Yellowstone, but I know I probably won’t make it. If I find a good home for her, then I can rest in peace when the time comes,” he said.
David Fine’s heartfelt plea to find a new home for his beloved dog Babs reflects his deep love and devotion to her. Despite his own terminal diagnosis, Fine puts Babs’ future first and makes sure she is taken care of after his death. His journey has been one of deep personal reflection, love, and sacrifice as he hopes to find a kind-hearted individual who will give Babs the companionship and security she deserves. His story is a powerful reminder of the bond between humans and animals and the lengths one will go to ensure their loved ones are cared for, despite life’s toughest challenges.
