A thrill seeker who checked in on board a missing submarine has detailed “fundamental safety concerns” as the reason for his departure.
Chris Brown, 61, and his friend missing British millionaire Hamish Harding paid a deposit to join the OceanGate-operated submarine.
The multi-millionaire was due to go on the missing submarine but reportedly changed his mind after learning about the security measures in place, according to The Sun.
That being said, the submarine is controlled by a controller similar to one seen on a video game console, which immediately raised questions in Brown’s mind. Brown was alerted to security concerns by a number of things, including the game’s controller and other technical issues that caused the delay.
Brown stated, “I learned that the submarine’s controls were based on controllers similar to those used in video games and that the ballast was made up of old scaffolding poles.” You could certainly use used scaffolding poles to make your own submarine. But this was a merchant ship. I finally sent them an email letting them know I couldn’t go ahead with this. Not convinced, I asked for a refund,” Brown said.
The 263-by-110-by-98-inch vessel can accommodate five people and includes heated walls to help combat the frigid conditions of deep-sea diving.

A search of nearly 10,000 square miles has been conducted, but the submarine, which disappeared Sunday morning, has not been found.
