Marcie Free, a pioneering singer and trailblazer for trans artists, was best known for her work with King Kobra, Signal, and Unruly Child. Her soaring vocals and emotive performances made her a beloved figure in the rock world.
News of her death was shared by longtime friend and drummer Jay Schellen, who collaborated with Free in Unruly Child. While the cause of death has not been disclosed, Schellen expressed his grief on social media: “Marcie was a marvel to behold. A voice without limits, unmatched in power, and a soul so open and beautiful—losing her is heartbreaking.”
He continued, “Bruce, Guy, Larry—all dear to me like family—are devastated. We started Unruly Child together in 1992, sharing music and friendship for decades. Marcie was always an angel—now she has her wings.”

Born Mark Edward Free in South Bend, Indiana, in 1954, Marcie embarked on her musical journey at just 19. Her career took her from Michigan to Las Vegas and ultimately to Los Angeles, where her talent quickly drew attention.
Her pivotal moment came in 1983 when she met drummer Carmine Appice, formerly of Ozzy Osbourne’s band. Together, they formed King Kobra, signing with Capitol Records in 1984. Albums like Ready to Strike (1985) and Thrill of a Lifetime (1986) highlighted Free’s extraordinary vocal range and cemented her as a defining presence in melodic rock.
