Tragedy at Hersheypark: 9-Year-Old Sophia Subedi’s Life Cut Short in Wave Pool Accident
A day meant for sunshine and laughter turned heartbreakingly silent when nine-year-old Sophia Subedi was pulled lifeless from the bustling wave pool at Hersheypark, one of America’s beloved amusement destinations.
As families enjoyed the splash and excitement around her, no one could foresee the tragedy unfolding beneath the surface—and the question echoed painfully: how could this happen in a place designed for safety, staffed with lifeguards, and governed by strict protocols?
Authorities have now confirmed that Sophia’s death was an accidental freshwater drowning. The Dauphin County Coroner’s Office ruled out any underlying medical conditions, underscoring the sudden and unexpected nature of this devastating event.
Sophia was visiting Hersheypark on the afternoon of Thursday, July 24, enjoying the park’s signature attraction—The Shore wave pool. At the time, the pool was monitored by approximately ten lifeguards, each certified in CPR, AED operation, deep-water rescue, and first aid, all prepared for emergencies.
Despite their rapid and dedicated efforts, emergency crews were unable to revive Sophia. She was rushed to Milton S. Hershey Medical Center but was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.
John Lawn, CEO of Hershey Entertainment and Resorts, expressed his condolences and recognized the quick action of the lifeguards.
“From the moment Sophia was seen in distress, our lifeguards responded swiftly and tirelessly,” Lawn said. “Her safety—and that of all our guests—remains our highest priority. We are conducting a thorough review of this tragedy to learn and improve, honoring Sophia’s memory through our continued vigilance.”
In response to the loss, a GoFundMe campaign was launched by Sophia’s family and community, raising over $25,500 toward a $60,000 goal. Described as a bright, lively, and deeply cherished young girl, Sophia had already made a lasting impact on everyone around her.
Born in Columbus, Ohio in 2016, Sophia and her family relocated to Harrisburg in 2022. Friends remember her as a curious, joyful child who brought warmth wherever she went.
The campaign’s message reflects the profound grief of those left behind:
“With heavy hearts, we share the loss of our beloved Sophia—our daughter, sister, student, and friend.”
While the coroner’s findings have closed their investigation, authorities continue to piece together the exact circumstances leading up to the drowning. The community waits for answers, hoping this tragedy will bring heightened
